Here, the boat is planing cleanly on the surface with spray, suggesting it is not carrying several tonnes of compact cargo. The infrared outline shows human figures, but there are no blocky, shrink-wrapped bundles stacked on the deck—the hallmark of a narco-run. On interdicted drug boats, those square packages are often visible even in grainy images because they are piled in the open hull. The configuration of the voyage also undermines the drug-run narrative. A small open craft of this type cannot make the 1,000-plus nautical mile transit from Venezuela to Florida with both crew and a heavy narcotics payload. Smuggling networks usually maximize efficiency: they cram these boats with drugs for short tactical hops between staging points in the Caribbean, or they use them in tandem with mother ships for refueling at sea. A lightly loaded vessel with multiple passengers, as seen here, fits neither of those patterns. For context, when naval or coast guard units genuinely interdict narcotics at sea, they present post-operation imagery of the seized cargo—pallets of bales, sometimes marked with brand logos, laid out on deck or on a dock. That material evidence is critical, because thermal footage alone cannot establish what was on board. In this case, nothing in the infrared image by itself substantiates the claim that the vessel was carrying drugs. At best, the type of boat is consistent with smuggling methods, but the observed loadout and behavior are not consistent with a typical narcotics shipment.
