This time with dire consequences.

When Trump cut Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante down by nearly 3 million acres, it was a lie, he knew it yet said it to millions of us and in front of the world.

His reason: "You can't go hunting, you can't go fishing, you can't do anything, you can virtually not even walk on it."

Weeks earlier, his own officials had already been briefed on the actual trails open there: Grand Gulch, Dark Canyon, the Fish and Owl Loop, routes backpackers and hikers already use every season, plus off-road routes built for motorized access deep into the monument. Hunting and fishing were never banned either.

Deputy Interior Secretary Kate MacGregor was standing right there. She backed him up anyway: "That's exactly right, sir. So you are remedying that today."

Hikers can still walk those trails. The access doesn't just disappear.

But the land under their feet loses all monument protection and becomes open to mining claims.

And this is what that could mean if someone stakes a claim, because it's happened here before, under Trump.

He cut Bears Ears in 2017. The Easy Peasy uranium mine reopened on land that fell outside the new boundaries, scarring the landscape with heavy machinery and piles of radioactive waste rock.

At least 14 new uranium claims were filed on the cut land in the years after. Grand Gulch, Dark Canyon, Fish and Owl Loop could sit next to the next one.

Bears Ears is now reduced to just 8.9% of its prior size. Grand Staircase-Escalante to 9.7%. The same signature that cut them dissolved the Bears Ears Commission, the first tribal-federal co-management body of its kind in U.S. history.

He did this while the Babylon Fire, the largest wildfire burning anywhere in the country, was actively burning inside Bears Ears' boundaries.

This isn't a new fight for Indigenous nations. From the 1940s to the 1980s, 30 million tons of uranium were extracted from mines on the Navajo Nation. More than 500 abandoned mines remain today, only one ever cleaned up.

This isn't final. The proclamations don't take effect for 60 days. Six tribal nations have condemned the move, and legal challenges are already coming.

This is still public land, yours, mine, ours. Now it's open to oil and gas. Fair trade, or is this a step too far?

As contractors descend on Big Bend, more than 140 river outfitters, local businesses and recreation organizations are urging Texas leaders to stop CBP's plans to cut off access to the Rio Grande and blast new roads through Big Bend National Park.

Signatories include virtually every local river outfitter, Texas Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, American Whitewater, Big Bend Tourism Alliance, Patagonia, Outdoor Alliance and more than 130 others.

CBP's current plans show them cutting off river access with steel "vehicle barriers" at almost every put-in and takeout along the Rio Grande in the region.

The letter warns that CBP's current plans "would end commercial and recreational river use in Big Bend National Park and along the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River, crippling local businesses and the regional tourism economy for no demonstrable security benefit."

Nobody wants this destruction to unfold. Texas leadership must step up to save their state's rural economies, natural heritage and most beloved national park.
