🇮🇱 — REPORT: Israel’s state comptroller warned today that dangerous terrorists were released during the war because of a severe shortage of prison space, while Shin Bet interrogations were hurt and prison staff faced growing risks.

• The report said Israel’s prison population nearly doubled during the war, rising 92% from 5,200 to 10,000 inmates, while the IDF and Israel Prison Service were not prepared for long-term wartime detention.

• The shortage led to the release of Shifa Hospital director Muhammad Abu Salmiya and 18 other detainees while Israeli hostages were still held by Hamas, with the comptroller also saying the prime minister was not informed in real time and no terrorists had been put on trial by the report’s publication.

1 Sivan - Ben Sira - 1896

On this day in 1896, the original Hebrew Ben Sira was discovered. Solomon Schechter uncovered ancient Hebrew manuscripts of the Book of Ben Sira in the Cairo Geniza, stunning the Jewish scholarly world. Until that point, the work, also known as Ecclesiasticus or the Wisdom of Ben Sira, had largely survived only in Greek and Christian traditions, leading many to assume that the original Hebrew version had been permanently lost. Schechter’s discovery dramatically changed that understanding, revealing that this important Second Temple era Jewish text had in fact been originally composed in Hebrew centuries earlier.

The Book of Ben Sira was written around the second century BCE by Yeshua ben Eleazar ben Sira, a Jewish sage living in Jerusalem during the late Second Temple period. The work contains ethical teachings, reflections on wisdom, prayer, friendship, charity, leadership, and the fear of God, often resembling the style of Mishlei (Proverbs). Although the book was ultimately not included in the canon of Tanach, it remained highly influential among Jews for centuries. Our sages occasionally quote or paraphrase it in the Talmud, and fragments found later among the Dead Sea Scrolls further confirmed its widespread use and respect in ancient Jewish society.

Schechter’s discovery in the Cairo Geniza was far more than an academic breakthrough. It became one of the clearest demonstrations of the remarkable continuity of Jewish textual tradition across thousands of years. Hidden away in a synagogue storage chamber in Egypt, these forgotten manuscripts preserved the Hebrew words of a Jewish sage from over two millennia earlier almost exactly as they had originally been written. The discovery also reinforced the immense historical value of the Geniza itself, which preserved countless documents illuminating Jewish religious, communal, and daily life across centuries of exile and dispersion.

היום, כ"ו אייר, ספירת "יסוד שביסוד", לפני 81 שנה - נפטר הצדיק רבי שלמה מזוועהיל זי"ע (מכונה "רב שלומק'ה).

הרבי מזוועהיל היה מופת של פשטות וענווה שאין כדוגמתם. הכרתי בירושלים יהודים שזוכרים אותו יושב על המדרכה ברחוב מאה שערים, מחכה לאוטובוס שייקח אותו לכותל המערבי, אליו הלך מדי יום. את הכותל כינה "הדואר הראשי" - שכן משם עוברות התפילות של כל עם ישראל.

כשהיו מבקשים ממנו ברכה או תשובה בנושא גורלי, היה טובל במקווה וכשהיה יוצא - בפיו הייתה תשובה מדויקת.

בשנת תרפ"ה (1925) ברח מרוסיה עם נכדו רבי מרדכי, כדי להציל אותו מהחינוך הקומוניסטי.

בדרך, באונייה, אמר לנכד "אני זורק את האדמו"רות לים. אני אחיה בירושלים כאיש פשוט ואני רוצה שאף אחד לא יידע מי אני".

כך הצליח לחיות תקופה באנונימיות, עד שיהודייה אחת מרוסיה זיהתה אותו וסיפרה שזהו הצדיק המופתי מזוועהיל. משם הכל היסטוריה.

🔥BIG: Harav Dovid Yosef, the Rishon L’Tzion and Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, called on Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Herzog to join President Donald Trump’s recent public call to honor Shabbos.

Speaking during his weekly shiur, Harav Yosef connected Trump’s White House proclamation encouraging Americans to respect Shabbos with the upcoming “Shabbos Kallah” before Shavuos, citing Chazal that Klal Yisroel will be redeemed through Shabbos observance.

“If a non-Jew respects our religion so much and calls for honoring Shabbos, then certainly we Jews should unite around keeping Shabbos Kodesh,” the Rav said.

🇧🇪✡️ — DEVELOPING: Belgian authorities filed criminal charges today against three mohels in Antwerp for allegedly performing bris milahs without a licensed doctor present, sparking backlash from Israel, the U.S., and Jewish leaders across Europe.

• Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar accused Belgium of “using criminal law to persecute Jews for practicing Judaism,” while U.S. Ambassador Bill White called the investigation “antisemitic” before being summoned by Belgian officials.

• Belgian officials denied the accusations, insisting the case was about enforcing medical laws requiring surgical procedures to be supervised by licensed physicians, as around 60 Jewish leaders appealed to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen to intervene.

With this act Belgium joins a short and shameful list, together with Ireland, of countries that use criminal law to prosecute Jews for practicing Judaism.

This is a scarlet letter on Belgian society.

The Brith Mila is the cornerstone of Jewish faith.

Many countries in Europe and around the world have created legal frameworks to facilitate the brith and Jewish religion freedom in their countries.

I call upon the Belgium government to act immediately and to find a solution.

השיחה אתמול עם שני הבחורים הצדיקים - א' ו-ש' - שיצאו לעזור להכנסת כלה ונאצלו לספוג ביזיון מכוער שהפך במהירות לאלומת אור גדולה של חסד ואחדות.

הבאתי להם מגש פירות בשם עם ישראל וביקשתי מהם ברכה לכל היהודים שתמכו ועזרו או נתנו מילה טובה.

הבחורים התרגשו מאוד. הם קצת מבולבלים ונבוכים, אבל מאמינים שככה הקב"ה גלגל את הדברים משמיים - כדי לזכות אותם בכך שעל ידם תתבצע המצווה באופן הנרחב ביותר.

"חשבנו שנחזור מהסיבוב עם 200 שקל מקסימום - בסוף אמרו לנו שיצא יותר מ-200,000 שקל", אמר א'.

א' ו-ש' והודו לכולם על התמיכה והאהבה שהורעפה עליהם מכל כיוון.
