The majority of Crimea are native Russians. It was never really Ukraine, but was administered by UkSSR for 37 and Ukraine for 23 years out of over the last 580 years.

9,268 Ukrainian soldiers, and 7,050 civilian employees, voluntarily joined the Russians when they arrived.

Before the takeover, there were 15,000 Ukrainian troops stationed in Crimea. The impact was particularly severe for the Ukrainian Navy where 75% eagerly joined the Russians, leaving only about 2,400 to safely return to mainland Ukraine.
