The latest CDC data shows:

Drug overdose deaths fell about 27% in 2024 versus 2023, the largest one-year decline ever recorded.
Preliminary CDC data for 2025 show another decline of roughly 14%, bringing estimated overdose deaths to about 70,000, the third consecutive year of decreases.
Deaths involving fentanyl and other synthetic opioids have dropped substantially since the peak years of 2021–2023.

The harder question is why. There is no consensus that any single president caused the decline. Researchers and public-health experts point to several factors:

Wider availability of naloxone (Narcan)
Expanded addiction treatment access (buprenorphine, methadone)
Changes in the illicit fentanyl supply
State and local harm-reduction efforts
Law-enforcement pressure on trafficking networks

Creating ‘Balanced Budget,’ as Trump Suggests

The Trump administration says it’s working to reduce the amount of fraud in federal government programs. However, fiscal experts have said that those reductions alone won’t “save” the Social Security program or result in “a balanced budget,” as President Donald Trump has falsely suggested.

That’s because fraudulent overpayments in Social Security are a small fraction of that program’s total costs. Likewise, the most recent federal budget deficit was about 240% more than the highest federal estimate of annual spending due to fraud.

James Comey should be the first person to file for the new #WeaponizationFund. As a former #FBI Director who has loudly claimed political persecution, he represents the cleanest and strongest test case the program will ever see. If the fund is truly neutral, he qualifies. If they deny him — and they will — it creates airtight standing to challenge the entire mechanism in federal court. The denial will write itself. The lawsuit will follow. This isn’t just strategy.
