@WaldmanLab@LatinXChem Basically, the metals remain contained on its interior, but they can be recovered through an acidic "elution" (as it is done with some membranes/raisins), which attatches protons to the -OH and -COOH groups of the alginate, and thus, disables metal sorption.

@WaldmanLab@LatinXChem This is why is has been found the Sargassum to be rich on metals such as Ni, Cr and As. Fortunately, they can be removed with an acidic treatment (pH < 3), which shifts the equilibrium to the formation of alginic acid, a condition that is not naturally met.
@WaldmanLab@LatinXChem Now, thanks to the "egg box" structure that the alginate obtains after the intraction with the metals, they are kept strongly binded, and thus, remain inside it, as you say. They act like a "metal disposal container"
