On Monday, New Mexico’s Epstein Truth Commission convened its first public meeting. While mainstream media is fawning over the "historic" announcement of 14 institutional subpoenas and powerful survivor testimony from Zorro Ranch victims, The Chile Wire is looking at the glaring loopholes and serious conflicts of interest they don't want you to see.
Here is what the other outlets are refusing to ask:
❌ Toothless Subpoenas: Chairwoman Rep. Andrea Romero bragged about issuing subpoenas to federal agencies like the FBI and DOJ. The truth? Under federal sovereign immunity, these agencies can—and likely will—legally ignore or delay compliance. The commission has zero prosecutorial power and no path to a grand jury.
❌ The House-Only Loophole: Why is this a House-only committee? By freezing out the Senate, this commission cannot access Senate records or compel state senators to testify. They deliberately bypassed a joint interim committee with actual statutory enforcement. Why?
❌ Look Who’s Leading It: Rep. Andrea Romero is making New Mexico's failure to register Epstein as a sex offender a centerpiece of her agenda. But records show that in January 2020, Romero personally voted to table HB 43—the exact bill that would have closed the loophole allowing Epstein to stay unregistered at Zorro Ranch.
❌ Convenient Timing: The commission’s interim report drops on July 31st—squarely in the middle of peak election season. Is this a real pursuit of justice, or an expensive political stunt funded by $2 million of your settlement money?
Survivor testimony matters, and the crimes committed at Zorro Ranch deserve full accountability. But the gap between what this commission is promising and what it can actually legally accomplish is wider than ever.
Watch our full breakdown to see the serious integrity questions surrounding this commission.
