The Trump administration’s new State Department report on Cuba is a dangerous attempt to criminalize peace activism and revive Cold War fearmongering.

Instead of acknowledging the devastating impact of the U.S. blockade, which has contributed to shortages of food, medicine, fuel, and electricity, it smears organizations like CODEPINK, the National Lawyers Guild, the Democratic Socialists of America, and Pastors for Peace simply for opposing U.S. policy.

For more than 60 years, the blockade has caused immense suffering while failing to achieve its stated goals. The answer isn’t more intimidation, sanctions, or threats, it’s diplomacy, solidarity, and an end to the blockade.

On June 18 Cuba’s National Assembly passed a sweeping and unprecedented package of more than 170 economic measures aimed at making Cuba more attractive to private and foreign investors. The island is currently suffering through nationwide blackouts and extreme shortages of essential supplies — its most acute crisis since the 1990s, and the direct result of the Trump administration’s intensification of US coercion.

But don’t get it twisted: This is not a capitalist restoration. Cuba is doing what is necessary to preserve the essential, as BT’s @ldejesusreyes explains.

Illinois Rep. Jonathan Jackson demanded an end to the US blockade on Cuba in a press conference on Tuesday. Jackson condemned the severe medicine shortages caused by the blockade, as well as the lack of fuel Cuban hospitals faced, which has forced doctors to use flashlights on their phones to perform surgery.

The press conference was organized by National Nurses United, the country’s largest union of registered nurses.
