Bitcoin was getting slammed in the media back then for all the dark web stuff, viruses, hacks, and shady deals.

One dev had a genius response. He basically said we will make a coin that takes all the heat.

Viruscoin launched on January 15 2014 as a Litecoin fork. It was never trying to compete with Bitcoin. The whole point was to polish up Bitcoin’s bad reputation by soaking up all the underground and black market noise.

The name was intentionally edgy to scare away the casual noobs while pulling in the exact crowd the devs wanted. The README and launch post on Bitcointalk made it clear the code was clean, audited by the community that would actually use it, and had zero malware. It was one of those wild short lived shitcoin experiments from the 2013-2014 altcoin days.
