After the AfD's election win in Sachsen-Anhalt, Brussels is openly discussing freezing the state's EU funding — roughly €2.95 billion in the current budget period, about €500 million per year, making up ~20% of the state's investment spending.

The precedent is real.

The EU froze up to €18 billion for Hungary and billions for Poland over rule-of-law violations, and in both cases it contributed to government changes.

Green MEP Daniel Freund says the same mechanism could apply to Sachsen-Anhalt if an AfD-led government undermines EU fundamental rights or the rule of law.

The AfD called it an undemocratic attack.

Chancellor Merz said the federal government can enforce the constitution in any state if needed.

Sachsen-Anhalt is Germany's most EU-subsidy-dependent state per capita — schools, hospitals, daycare centers all run on this money.
