Friends, ministry can be chaotic, grueling, and sometimes dark. As we daily battle the prince of this world, do not forget to look for the Light piercing through the clouds. The Blessed Hope is there, and it will be worth it all when we see Christ! Look up and keep focus on Him.

Friends, leadership in ministry requires an adherence and understanding to the teachings and demonstrated work of Christ. Yes, we are not perfect and we will fall short in the eyes of those we serve. However, if we keep failing because of the same thing, then we are not learning.

Friends, being a leader in ministry requires a lot of intangible traits. Two of the greatest traits is the ability to recognize we do not know everything and that we do not need to be the smartest person in the room. If we cannot accept these facts, our leadership will be futile.

Friends, how can we be effective and worthy leaders in ministry if we do not even faithfully talk to the One directing our lives? Answer: We can’t. Talking is more than praying. It’s reading His Word daily. It’s hard at times, but be faithful and the worldly noise will diminish.

Friends, we have heard the expression, “It’s lonely at the top.” Leadership in ministry is never easy. However, we are never alone. Lean on the One above for comfort, and empower and trust ministers below us to do the front line work. Then, listen to learn from above and below.

Friends, as we rise on the ministry “ladder” of authority, more is required of us by the ministers “below” us. If those on the frontlines are conditioned to wait for “Moses to come down the mountain,” we have failed to produce leaders. All we have done is train Pavlov’s dogs.

Friends, there are no constants within ministry save one. That constant is God. Regardless of what happens as we minister, He always intends everything for His glory and for our good. God is not surprised like we are. He always gives grace and peace for hard times in ministry.

Friends, if our ministry’s only goal is the fulfillment of the financial, physical, mental, or emotional needs of others, we have missed the mark. All of these ministry services are needful, but the greatest need of mankind is Christ. Show them Christ first, and meet their needs.

Friends, pain in ministry comes when we get use to seeing those ministering around us, steadfastly display the attributes of God. However, we are a corrupted substitute. Remember, we are all fallen. We can never serve invariably. Our standard-bearer is Christ, not imperfect man.

Friends, the longer we serve in ministry, the more jaded we become toward the smallest irritant. Why? We have become battle-worn. However, do not neglect to let the Potter smooth out our roughness so we can be a refined vessel of light; not one of pointed short-temperedness.

Friends, regardless of the hardships we endure within ministry, we still continue. Why? Because we love the One we serve more than those we serve. If we love those we serve more than Christ, we risk “dying on the vine” and become bitter toward God, who called us first to do it.
