Paolo Maldini has just dropped a bombshell in a recent interview, explaining why he and Leonardo are resigning from their roles as the Italy national team’s technical director and advisor just 10 days after signing their contracts.

Paolo Maldini 🗣️: “One of my biggest mistakes was ever accepting the role in the first place. Italian football has fallen so far, and it’s all because of the federation. When we were appointed, we drafted a three-man shortlist to take over as manager of the national team. Pep Guardiola was obviously our first choice, while Andrea Pirlo was our third.

We negotiated well with Pep, and we reached an agreement with him. However, when we informed the federation about our agreement, they told us they couldn’t afford to pay him and said we needed to find a cheaper option.

🚨 Pep Guardiola on rejecting the Italy job: “The problem goes far beyond the manager.”

“Perhaps now people understand why I made that decision.

Managing a national team is about far more than standing on the touchline every few months. Success begins with unity. There has to be complete trust between the manager, the federation, the technical department and everyone responsible for the direction of football.

Italy is one of the biggest football nations in history, but they have now missed three consecutive World Cups. Any coach who accepts that job isn’t just expected to qualify again; he’s expected to restore an identity, rebuild belief and return Italy to competing for the biggest trophies.

That doesn’t happen by changing one coach after another. It requires rebuilding from the foundations. The structure, the vision, the youth development, the decision-making—everything has to move in the same direction. Players alone cannot carry that responsibility.

In the short time I spent evaluating the project, I realised this wasn’t the right moment for me. Sometimes the bravest decision is to step away before accepting a challenge that doesn’t yet have the stability needed for success.

We all know the saying: Rome wasn’t built in a day. The same applies to rebuilding Italian football. It needs patience, clear leadership and a long-term plan—not just another managerial appointment every time results don’t go the right way.”
