Bible Study: Seek God First

Main Bible verse

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Matthew 6:33, KJV

1. What does “seek” mean?

To seek means to look for something and make it important.

So when Jesus says, “Seek first the kingdom of God,” He is saying:

Put God first in your life.

Before money.
Before your job.
Before your plans.
Before your worries.
Before what people think about you.

Ask yourself:

“What does God want me to do?”

2. What is the “Kingdom of God”?

The Kingdom of God is about God ruling in your life.

It means you allow God to guide:
•Your thoughts
•Your decisions
•Your relationships
•Your money
•Your work
•Your future
•Your behavior

It is not just about going to church.

It is about letting God be your King every day.

3. What does “His righteousness” mean?

Righteousness means living in a way that pleases God.

It means trying to do what is right, even when nobody is watching.

For example:

Someone cheats you, but you choose not to take revenge.

You find money that does not belong to you, but you return it.

You have an opportunity to lie, but you tell the truth.

You are angry, but you choose to forgive.

You are not perfect. You will make mistakes.

But your heart should always be saying:

“God, help me live the way You want me to live.”

4. What does “all these things shall be added” mean?

This part is important.

Jesus was talking about things people worry about, such as food, clothing and daily needs.

He was teaching us not to make these things the most important thing in our lives.

God knows what you need.

That does not mean you should stop working or stop planning.

It means:

Work hard, but trust God.

Make plans, but trust God.

Earn money, but don’t let money become your god.

Have dreams, but put God before your dreams.

5. What Jesus is teaching us

Imagine you have two choices.

Choice 1:
“I need money first, then I will think about God.”

Choice 2:
“I will put God first and trust Him while I work toward my goals.”

Matthew 6:33 teaches us to choose Choice 2.

God does not say you cannot want a better life.

He says:

Don’t make the better life more important than Me.

6. A simple example

Imagine a child going to school.

The child is worried:

“Will I have food?”

“Will I pass my exams?”

“Will I have good clothes?”

“Will I get a good job one day?”

The child’s father says:

“Focus on your studies. I will take care of you.”

That is similar to what Jesus is teaching us.

Do your part.

Trust God with what you cannot control.

7. What does this verse mean for your life?

You can start each day by asking:

“God, what do You want from me today?”

Then:
•Pray before making important decisions.
•Read God’s Word.
•Do your work honestly.
•Treat people well.
•Avoid things you know are wrong.
•Work toward your goals.
•Give thanks for what you already have.
•Trust God when things are uncertain.

The biggest lesson

God should not be your last option.

Don’t only run to God when you have problems.

Put Him first when things are good too.

Before you ask:

“God, give me this.”

Learn to ask:

“God, what do You want me to do?”

That is what seeking God first looks like.

1.What am I putting before God right now?

Simple prayer

“Father, help me to seek You first. Help me not to put money, success, people, or my problems before You. Teach me to trust You and live in a way that pleases You. Take care of the things I cannot control, and give me wisdom to do my part. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
