Verified. In Aug 2011, after Ricardo Carvalho walked out of Portugal's camp over not starting (Pepe preferred), Ronaldo said during the same camp: "No one has a guaranteed place on the team. Whoever is performing best will play. The coach knows better than anyone." Contemporary reports confirm it. He has now left camp himself after being benched under Jorge Jesus.

❤️🩹🇦🇷 Leo Messi: “Dad, you kept asking me to play in one last World Cup… just days before it began was when your condition got worse”.
“It was the first time you weren’t going to be there with me at tournament… but Mom kept telling me you were going to get better and that you’d be well enough to travel”.
“I kept telling you we were going to reach the World Cup final so you could make the trip, this was my mission once again”.
“After every match, I waited for and missed your message. That’s when I realized how serious the situation really was”.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about going as far as possible, give you more time and the chance to watch one of the games”.
“We reached the final, but you couldn’t be there. I wanted to win it so I could bring the trophy to you and show you another one. I couldn’t”.
“My legs just couldn’t give me any more”.
“This time I tried to push beyond what my body could handle, but I couldn’t”.
“I never managed to feel physically right”.
“We didn’t become champions Dad, but you have no idea how much we enjoyed every match. Once again, you were right: I had to be there and play in it… as you told me, always”.
The 2008 Olympic: Di María’s goal wouldn't have happened without Messi. Messi picked up the ball in his own half, shrugged off tight Nigerian marking, and delivered a perfect, splitting pass directly into Di María's path.
The 2022 World Cup: Messi opened the scoring with a cold-blooded penalty. Later, it was Messi’s deft, one-touch flick past the French midfield that launched the legendary counter-attack leading to Di María's goal. When France tied it, Messi scored again in extra time.
The 2026 World Cup Final: Messi led his team to the final with 8 goals and 4 assists without Di María

recency bias for messi?😂
someone that won the balon d’or back to back four times in a row before ronaldo’s ucl 3pt. why una no end the debate there? mind you, even ronaldo didn’t win any international trophy with portugal at the time. messi is still doing it at the age of 39 and yall are saying its recency bias😂
maybe your goat should’ve retired after he won an international trophy so that we wouldn’t witness his fall off🤷🏼♂️
this "recency bias" thing you people are saying, na Saka una think say we dey talk about.
you go think say Ronaldo no play for same league with Messi for 9 years win only 2 trophies
or say Messi no get 4 UCL titles 😂😭
or say Messi no evict Ronaldo comot UCL twice.
The answer is servant leadership.
I’ll give you two scenarios.
When Messi moved to PSG, in their championship league match against City, he laid down behind the wall to form a shield against low balls.
He did not need to do that.
But he did it anyway
Now look at Ronaldo. In 2022, Erik Ten Hag wanted to bring him on in the 89th minute, after United were 2 - 0 against Tottenham.
What did he do?
He refused, then stormed off into the tunnel.
This was United’s best performance maybe all season, yet because He wasn’t the star, he made a mess out of the whole thing.
He was dropped from the squad the next game, and was fined about 2 weeks worth of wages (about £1m)
Whether you think he had a right to do that or not is not my argument.
I want you to look at the impact on his teammates.
Imagine being under pressure for months at United, pundits saying all sorts about the team.
Now you put up a performance against one of the big 6 and played really really well.
You are hoping that some of the pressure finally eases up, only to see that the entire discussion that week was how the “star” of the team decided to throw a tantrum.
Do you think any player in that squad will feel loyalty towards him?
The point is that Messi considers himself a servant to the team, and would do whatever needs to be done to ensure the team succeeds, but for Ronaldo, it’s the opposite.
Ronaldo considers his team a servant to his ambition, and would do whatever it takes, including throwing his teammates under the bus to get that next goal.
It has obviously made both of them very decorated players, but only one of them will inspire a team to die for them on the pitch.
That’s why it seems like the Portugal team seems disjointed and can’t seem to connect, and why the Argentinian team would die for Messi.
