“As he builds his portrait of Johnson, Boswell brings the past before us with a vividness that sometimes makes the breath catch in our throats.”
Honored to have biographer @LucySRAusten writing on James Boswell writing on Samuel Johnson at The Priory:

God morning! My day has begun with prayer, a pistachio muffin, and seeing the cross in ordinary life. 🙏
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” —Matthew 16:24
Happy Feast Day of St Luke The Evangelist, Patron Saint of Artists - since 6th century, said to be the first artist to have painted the Bl. Virgin Mary. Also Patron Saint of physicians. Blessings of healing ! #StLuke#Luketheevangelist#artist#painting
I’ll be painting two large commissions for St. Mary RC Church in Hamburg, PA, depicting choirs of angels and archangels.
Some of you may remember that I painted The Baptism of Christ for the same parish back in 2018. At that time, plans were also in place for similar paintings for the church.
I hope you’ll enjoy following along as I bring these new works to life over the next two months!

I’m so touched by these words from my friend James Finley: “All our ways of living have built right into them opportunities for that kind of homecoming. I think as we move along, a deeper insight is that this longing, this homesickness, is an echo of God.” https://t.co/uxTJkfIpAA
@KSPrior Yep! Stumbled upon the set at a local auction. Volume 4 includes the original fold-out facsimile page of Samuel’s handwriting. BTW…have enjoyed reading your sub-stack contributions on Mr. Johnson, Karen. Thanks!
The Life of Samuel Johnson by James Boswell, Esquire. Printed by T. Cadell & W. Davies. Antiquarian, 1807, 5th Edition, 4-vol. leather-bound set. Beautiful!
It’s not every day one gets to handle, read, & enjoy 217 year-old books, but today was that day for Francis & me! 📚
We recently heard from a “Daily Meditations” reader named Kathy, who shared that “many in the African American community speak of death as ‘home-going.’ Not going home. Not homecoming. But home-going. I like that.” https://t.co/i9k7jOgQtN
