**Dr. Prasanta Kumar Mohanty — The Engineer India Forgot**

Every building you enter in India. Every reinforced steel beam. Every ton of secondary steel produced. His work. And almost no one knows his name. Even Odias don't.

Dr. P.K. Mohanty is 93. Alzheimer's is taking him. Before his story is lost to time, it needs to be said.

**The choice:**

In the 1960s, he left Odisha for the US. Masters. PhD from Utah State. He could have stayed. Most engineers who left never came back. He chose differently. He chose to return to India. He chose to make Odisha prosper.

**What he built:**

He commercialised coal-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI/sponge iron) in India—1984, OSIL, Palaspanga, Keonjhar. Proved you could industrialise using India's own iron ore and ordinary coal, not imported coking coal.

That technology became the foundation for India's entire secondary steel sector.

He also brought Torsteel technology to India—the reinforcing bars in every building constructed in the last four decades.

**The invisibility:**

He never name-dropped. Worked with every major industrialist of his era but built no monument to himself. Travelled from Palaspanga to Bhubaneswar in cargo trucks when required. A man entirely devoted to the work, indifferent to recognition.

**What we're about to lose:**

When his story ends, we lose more than a biography. We lose the documented record of how one engineer solved the specific technological problems that allowed India to industrialise using its own capability.

He came back when he didn't have to. He built for Odisha when easier paths existed. He chose contribution over recognition.

The nation still doesn't know what he gave it.
