He knows because this will be such a large company it will be a major part of all key stock indices; that means institutions and index funds will be forced buyers; they have to own all the big stocks and SpaceX will immediately be one of the biggest. So why just give it to them at the IPO? Instead, give it to retail and make the forced buyers all compete for shares on the open market; they must own the shares so they will be pure price takers; if retail diamonds hands their stock then it will get wild; Elon is engineering the biggest public market price boom in the history of the world #spacex
