15 months later and the court just spat in the faces of two children who watched their parents get executed in a Rustenburg parking lot.

Wilma Koster (66) and George Koster (69) were shot dead in broad daylight on 14 June 2025 in the Platinum Square parking area. A white Kia with no plates pulled in beside their Jeep. Door flung open. Bump. Argument. Onke Bongo pulled a gun and shot George at close range. When Wilma tried to stop it, she smashed the Kia’s rear window trying to get to her husband, Bongo shot her dead too. Both bodies were found on either side of the car, front doors hanging open.

Paramedics declared them dead on the scene. Witnesses heard the first two shots, then more. One round hit a shop wall. They fled. No firearm on the Kosters. None registered to them.

The court swallowed Bongo’s “self-defence” story anyway. Acquitted of murder. Convicted only of obstructing justice for running. Five years, fully suspended. They walk.

George Jr. and Jacqueline sat through 15 months of their parents being painted as the aggressors. Last words that morning, “We’ll stop at the shops, then we’ll braai later. See you then.” They never came home.

This is the system. Two White pensioners gunned down in a shopping centre car park and the shooters get a slap and a wave. The children are crushed. The state is “considering” an appeal. Don’t hold your breath.

And they’re listed… not because they segregate anyone, but simply because they mention the words transformation or redress, some coz they require some racial/sex/disability or even sector-specific representation such as “required Faith based leader,” youth representation, community or stakeholder groups, and even professional or sectoral expertise on regulatory boards where some of those groups historically or recently weren’t part of those structures.

My personal opinion: ⚠️ Yes it is concerning that there are no clear end goals… no cut-off timelines… no measurable targets. South Africa hasn’t had a purely merit based system for over 100 years. I don’t think transformation pressures should be a permanent feature of society.

There has to be parts of our system where we declare victory and let other systems take over now. And where these pressures don’t always succeed, alternative tools need to be explored. Keeping something say for example BEE forever, even when it isn’t achieving the intended goals, becomes very hard to defend.

We need the best of each community competing with the best of other communities…that’s the only way to get the ultimate best of our communities running our society.
