Yes, without Britain, there would be no steam engine, steam trains, telephones, parliamentarism, modern constitutionalism, English as the lingua france, penicillin, end of the slave trade, ATMs, logarithms, Shakespeare, the theory of evolution and so much more.
In 1000 years, once we have gotten over neurotic jealously and third worlidsm, people will look at Britain with more admiration than we look at Ancient Greece today. It is quite evidently the greatest nation the world has ever seen. It's not even particularly close.
Today is 37 years since the Tiananmen Massacre
On this day in 1989, the Chinese Communist Party ordered the People's Liberation Army to open fire on its own citizens.
Peaceful pro-democracy students and workers who gathered in Beijing's Tiananmen Square demanding freedom, anti-corruption, and basic human rights were crushed under tanks and gunfire.
The protests began in mid-April 1989, triggered by the death of reformist leader Hu Yaobang. On May 13, students began a hunger strike. Martial law was declared on May 20, but protesters remained peaceful.
In the early hours of June 4, troops advanced with tanks and live ammunition. Soldiers fired on unarmed civilians blocking their path in the streets surrounding the square.
Hundreds to thousands were killed. Thousands more were imprisoned, tortured, or disappeared.
To this day, the Chinese government censors all mention of it, erases it from history books, and threatens anyone who remembers.
To illustrate how committed sections of the media are to tone policing the response to events, rather than responding to the events themselves, in the last 48 hours Dan Hodges has posted 57 times about Reforms response the Nowak murder and 0 times about the murder itself.
🚨 NEW: Keir Starmer is considering cutting the planned £18bn increase in defence spending to £15bn over fears the Iran war makes it unaffordable

🗣️ "Nigel Farage issued a statement on camera calling for people to respond with pure cold rage? That's incitement, isn't it?" - @cathynewman
🗣️ "Did you watch the bodycam footage, Cathy? - Reform UK's Zia Yusuf
I’m assuming they are very angry because unlike you, who views literally everything you see in life through the prism of “comms” and “impressions”, they aren’t happy an innocent young boy choked to death in his own blood due to catastrophic institutional failures that run through the entirety of the state.
It is very instructive that you are clearly more angry about Reforms response than you are about the circumstances of the murder itself.
@DPJHodges Out of interest Dan, had the father asked for British people to take to the streets and engage in violence and revenge, would you be encouraging public figures to respect his wishes?
🚨 NEW: No 10 says there is "no such thing as two-tier policing" in response to Henry Nowak's murder
"Police enforce the law without fear or favour, regardless of ethnicity"
Personally, I think that trying to force silence over such an egregious case of institutional negligence qualifies you as “scum” more than the people willing to challenge the ideology that leads to an 18-year old boy choking to death on his own blood.
But maybe that’s just me.
Number of people asking me to comment on the Henry Nowak case. His father said "We do not want his death to be used to create further division, hatred or tension". If you can't respect his wishes, you're scum. That's what I think.
I've just watched Laura Kuenssberg's interview with Nicola Sturgeon, and she comes a cross very credible, and you can clearly see that she's hurt.
I believe her.
@echetus Battalions of Pantsuit-wearing women and West-end luvvies with their enslaved football hooligan cannon fodder crossing the Tweed after forming their New Covenant to the Woke Religion
Suicidal move if true.
They have over 400 MPs and Burnham will have legitimacy with the PLP if he wins.
There is no scenario where they don’t lose a significant chunk of their MPs from various attack vectors, even best case. So what’s the point?
@RichardHanania This was a conscious choice made by government, and not what people voted for during Brexit.
You would know this if you spent more than 5 seconds looking at it.
Looks like it’s going to be a long a painful summer for the Russians.
Ukraine has been very quietly opening up a huge capability gap in drone warfare capabilities over the past 12 months.
Overnight, Ukrainian attack drones struck Russia’s Taganrog airfield, and for the first time, successfully destroyed a pair of Tu-142 Bear-F long-range maritime patrol aircraft.
