The Kumbabhishekam of the #Madurai #MeenakshiAmmanTemple concluded yesterday, and I had the opportunity to attend it in person along with my mother. Overall, I felt that the #TVKVijay‌ government had made good arrangements for the event. Those wishing to witness the Kumbabhishekam had to apply for pass through the temple's official site, after which passes were distributed through a lottery system. The same process is followed for the Thirukalyanam passes as well. Once selected, applicants receive an email and can collect their passes from the designated location. The Kumbabhishekam pass distribution was carried out in a similar manner.

Watching yesterday's events brought back memories of the 2009 Kumbabhishekam. After the ceremony in 2009, I remember having to walk all the way from the temple to Simmakkal just to board a bus. From there, I took a bus towards K.Pudur. That memory is still fresh. Compared to 2009, yesterday's arrangements were much better. There was a huge crowd, but the security arrangements by the @Maduraidistpol1 were also largely in line with the scale of the event. However, our people certainly made things difficult for the police personnel on duty. For nearly a week, the @mdu_corp administration had been continuously publicising the arrangements for the Kumbabhishekam. The authorities had clearly communicated which routes could be used to reach the temple and which roads would be closed. These instructions were repeatedly publicised well in advance.

The authorities knew that lakhs of devotees would turn up. At the same time, there simply isn't enough space inside the temple premises to accommodate everyone around the upper gopuram areas. People already inside have to move out before others can enter without creating dangerous congestion. Those holding passes were required to use Chithirai Veethi for entry and exit. That is precisely why the city police had planned well in advance and instructed people without passes not to enter that particular area. It is the responsibility of the public to cooperate with the government and the police during an event of this scale. Unfortunately, some people pushed the police personnel aside and even knocked down barricades, making the situation extremely difficult for those managing the crowd.

The temple administration had advised devotees without passes to view the Kumbabhishekam from Avani Moola Veethi, and the HRCE Department implemented that arrangement. LED screens were also installed at several locations so that devotees could watch the ceremony. There may have been a few shortcomings. No administration can satisfy every single person when lakhs of people gather at one location. But, from what I personally witnessed, I believe the arrangements made by the government were largely in order. Drinking water, medical facilities and food distribution with support from private organisations were all adequately arranged.

There were also reports of confusion regarding the sprinkling of the sacred water from the kalasams. But it is important to understand what kalasa water actually means. It is the water used in the kalasams during the ritual, it is not water that has been stored in tanks by the tonne and is then distributed individually to every devotee. When lakhs of people gather, the sacred water has to be mixed and sprinkled across the gathering. There is simply no practical way for every devotee to receive the exact water from the original kalasam. This is not something being done for the first time. Such arrangements have been followed for many years during large scale temple events.

I also noticed Ministers @CTR_Nirmalkumar and @RameshOffcl constantly moving around the venue, personally monitoring the arrangements and responding to issues. I have rarely seen ministers personally running around and actively overseeing an event of this scale like this.

The Kumbabhishekam was completed successfully, and credit should be given to the @tnhrcedept Department for the arrangements and to the district police for carrying out the security arrangements with precision. Having attended the event personally, I believe the overall arrangements deserve appreciation.
