🔴 IEP meetings move fast, and that is exactly when parents get lost.

📌 If you don't understand something being said in the room, you have every right to stop the meeting and ask for clarity. The school has an obligation to explain everything to you, and to do it in your native language.

→ It's okay to ask questions, even if you feel like you should already know the answer.
→ If you speak a language other than English, the school is required to provide an interpreter in the meeting.
→ Your documentation is also required to be provided in your language, not just the verbal conversation.

🔴 A student who has to go to the nurse 9 times a day to have their blood sugar tested is missing a lot of class time, and most schools don't realize that's an IEP issue.

📌 Diabetes is a medical disability, but when it starts eating into instructional time and daily functioning, it becomes something special education has to address. It's not just about academics.

✨ Key insights:
→ Frequent nurse visits for blood sugar testing can mean the student is missing enough class time that they need additional support written into the IEP.
→ Schools often treat SEI (specially designed instruction) as strictly academic, when the law actually requires it to cover anything that happens bell to bell.
→ Part of the support can be teaching the student to self-manage their own disability, not just accommodating around it.

"When your son went to high school, you had to fight to keep him under his IEP."

📌 That fight is real, and it happens most often to very bright students. Bright kids get overlooked because schools assume they don't need support, but twice exceptional students need it just as much.

✨ Key insights:
→ In Texas, IEP and special education are handled separately from GT (gifted and talented), and the two systems often don't talk to each other.
→ Some states, like West Virginia, actually build gifted services into the IEP process itself, which means the student gets evaluated and recognized as twice exceptional (2E) from the start.
→ When a student qualifies for both gifted services and an IEP, the lack of coordination between the two systems makes advocacy harder, not easier.

🔴 I looked up Houston ISD's budget, the biggest school district in Texas, and it's around 2 billion dollars. Then I looked at what due process hearings and settlements can cost districts nationwide: 1.3 billion.

📌 That's not pocket change. That's half of one major district's entire annual budget going to legal fights instead of classrooms.
