Miles Davis on why Prince and Michael Jackson deserve more respect than people think.

In a candid conversation, the jazz legend reveals something unexpected about two of pop music's biggest names.

When Prince and Michael Jackson are brought up, Davis initially seems caught off guard:

"I'm surprised that you would mention a Prince and a Michael Jackson. For some reason I wouldn't have thought that you would put them in that category."

But then he catches himself.

"I don't know why. Because they're really composers."

Davis breaks down what separates true composers from mere performers. It comes down to what happens in the silence between the singing:

"When you sing a song and you have to have an arrangement, when you stop singing, they have to fill in the crack. And some people can fill in cracks more. Prince will say something, he'll sing right a phrase, underneath is the music that you hear under him, and after a phrase are short compositions actually."

He draws a clear distinction between how Prince and Michael work:

"Prince does everything himself. But Michael has about three other composers. One for brass, one for funky sound to bass drums, a different composer for violins, a different composer for horns."

The most-liked post in the platform's history went out on a Friday night in August 2020. It came from Chadwick Boseman's own account. His family had posted a short statement confirming that he had died at 43.

He had been keeping a secret for four years. Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016, the same year he first played Black Panther. Over those four years the cancer spread from stage 3 to stage 4, and he kept working the whole way through.

Look at what he filmed in those four years. Black Panther, which made more than 1.3 billion dollars around the world. Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, which each made more than 2 billion. Marshall. 21 Bridges. Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods. And his last film, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, which won him a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild award after his death, plus an Oscar nomination he never got to see. All of it filmed between surgeries and rounds of chemo.

Only a handful of people knew, mostly his agent, his business partner, and his trainer. Most of his co-stars had no idea. Neither did the studio. He bulked up to play a king, then dropped the weight for other roles, all while his body was fighting a disease nobody could see. On 21 Bridges, a film he was also producing, he wanted Sienna Miller as his co-star, and when the studio would not meet her salary, he quietly paid the difference himself. He did that while sick.

Then came April 2020. He posted a video about getting meals to hospitals during the pandemic, and he looked thin and worn down. People made memes. Some joked that he was on drugs. He turned off the comments and started deleting photos. Four months later, everyone realized what they had really been looking at.

Within a day of the announcement, that post had more likes than any tweet ever posted. It went past 6 million. Almost six years later, it is still number one.

When Missouri Governor Blunt considered appointing a judge Leo opposed, Leo wrote to the governor's chief of staff: "He will have zero juice on the national scene if he ends up picking a judge who is a disgrace. If this happens, there will be fury from the conservative base, the likes of which you and the Governor have never seen."

Blunt appointed the judge anyway. Leo followed up: "Your boss is a coward and conservatives have neither the time nor the patience for the likes of him."
Blunt chose not to run for reelection at 37. His political career ended.

That's the enforcement structure operating underneath the pipeline. Not persuasion. Not argument. Explicit threat of political consequences from a private citizen who had never held office, never argued a case, and never served a day on the bench - directed at a sitting governor.
