Arnold may have gotten fooled by it, but if Arnold reads him, he’d see that he either stayed and didn’t go or he was there to make a play on the TE. Dump it out wide to the WR. The WR even turned to him, so he was definitely an option.

@Tiger2827 @AUBCentral What do you mean there is no going back? The LB didn’t bite on the sweep and the WR on the sweep was open with a blocker and only 1 DB. He could’ve absolutely gone back if he reads that LB. He never did though, he just ran the play as is and threw it to the primary target.

@markloser @AUBCentral The play is all around reading the LB. If he gets baited by the sweep (the design) then the TE is open with blockers. If the LB stays or covers the TE, you kick it out to the sweeping WR. That isn't going through 3 reads. It's taking what the defense give you.

@UVASPORTSPARODY @AUBCentral I don’t even think it’s on 75. It looks like he is meant to take on a block from the secondary. The play is assuming if the TE gets it, the LB isn’t there because he was baited by the sweep. It looks like he just missed a block, but he’s looking to block a DB, not the LB.

@AUBCentral That is a lot of assuming. I just think it’s unfair to say it’s a bad play, when you threw it right to the guy the unblocked LB was running to. If he throws it to the sweeping WR, he get a block and he’s into the 2nd level, making it a good play.

@meh_130 @AUBCentral I’m sure it’s designed to be the decoy, to lure that LB out. But when the LB broke back inside to go after the TE, you go back to the sweep and he’s wide open. He even turns to the QB expecting the ball, so he was definitely the 2nd option. Arnold just missed it.

@AUBCentral Sorry, designed for the TE, not the RB. Frazier was the target on this play. Cain was still open on the screen though and Arnold had just already made up his mind where he was going with the ball.

@AUBCentral I’m no expert, but this looks like this is on Arnold, not the play call. The play is designed for the RB, but the read is the LB. The LB breaks to the RB (unblocked) and Arnold has a 2nd option to go back to the WR sweep, who is wide open with a blocker out front. He doesn’t.

@AUBCentral Now, you can say that’s coaching and Arnold should’ve been taught this play inside and out, but to just blame play calling on this single play isn’t fair. This is a case of the QB not seeing the field and taking what the defense gives you, which is an open sweep with a blocker.

@AUBCentral Kids are gonna go on their visits. That is the smart and professional to do. Ultimately, it is their decision and it’s not a matter of “letting them walk.” We can’t force them to make that decision and if we tried to, we’d probably lose a lot more than we’d get.
