When I found the national Federation of the blind. I learned about the organization and I have met so many friends and mentors. They have really guided me along my journey.
#MeetTheBlind
I learned a lot of my alternative techniques in school, but unfortunately I was not able to get the best services. I opted to go to a training center and it changed my life.#MeetTheBlind
@mchurchgirl Yes indeed, and that is one of the great things about training – – the interaction between students of all experiential levels and those who have walked a similar path before. #MeetTheBlind
@rlawyer Absolutely! Too many folks feel as though they are alone, not realizing the vibrant network of friends and mentors available to them in the Federation! #MeetTheBlind
A1, Please understand that blindness does not mean that you’r life "is over," and that you can no longer be a productive, contributing, fulfilled member of your community and society. #MeetTheBlind
Good afternoon, everyone! As with the other Federation centers, many of our students experience blindness later in life, and navigating this New phase can often be simultaneously rewarding and challenging. #MeetTheBlind
@chrisWalkerNFBV @NFB_voice One of our recent graduates calls Thailand her home, and, like you, is a great ambassador for that vibrant culture. #MeetTheBlind
In one hour we are hosting our #MeetTheBlind Twitter chat for this week’s topic: lived experiences with #blindness, race, and ethnicity. Join the conversation.
@mchurchgirl A6: What may be perceived as a disability, in many instances can be a benefit. Additionally, some of the accommodations used to make things accessible benefit others. For example, captioning for the deafblind creates searchable transcripts for the sighted. #MeetTheBlind
@aaronespinozaca @NFB_voice So sorry if you thought your views were discounted. We all need to listen, learn, and make sure the lines of communication remain open. Only then can we live our best lives and improve circumstances for those who come after us.
@Angellissa True enough. As with society at large, people in the disability community aren't always as accepting as we might be. But, thanks to leaders like you and the dedication of so many Federation members, attitudes are changing!
KYU2 acquiring another disability was a little scary at the beginning, but because I didn’t stop and I developed alternative techniques, it’s not scary. I don’t like when society feel sorry for me. #MeetTheBlind
@mchurchgirl Exactly, Mary. You and so many others are living your lives, demonstrating that the alternative techniques of blindness are empowering not inferior! #MeetTheBlind
