These things didn’t exist back when the birth rate was higher. Why would these problems still existing now suddenly change how people view having children?

Maybe it has something to do with the onslaught of antinatalist propaganda. Years of parents telling their kids “don’t have kids, it sucks” “don’t have kids you’ll lose your freedom” “don’t have kids, you’ll be enslaved to your partner” “ don’t have kids, you still have your entire life ahead of you” “put off having children for as long as possible” “focus on anything and everything besides having children” over and over again would probably change how some people feel about having kids.
