And coming off of them was harder than anything else I've ever done in my life, and it took 15 years and 50 attempts.

First look at nutrition.

Magnesium
Vitamin D
Vitamin B12
Folate (Vitamin B9)
Vitamin B6
Zinc
Iron
Omega-3 fatty acids

Then rule out pathology.

Chronic pain.
Thyroid dysfunction.
Cortisol.
Inflammation.
Hormones.

Then look for social.

Faith.
Exercise.
Relationships.
Sun exposure.
Sleep.
Hobbies.
Work.
Purpose.

And no matter what the case is... no matter what biology or sociology you must contend with...

Jesus Christ is the answer. Through and through.

I worked in TV production and special events for most of my career.
Here’s a story I’ve always remembered.
Prior to Ronald Reagan’s death, the Reagan Foundation contacted me to help plan his funeral. During one of the meetings I attended, I met a 92-year-old funeral director from Santa Monica.
I asked him why he hadn’t retired. He looked at me and said:
“I work in this business… I see this every time.
You retire, you play golf every day, you get bored of golf, then you start drinking more. You start waking up a little later because you’re tired from all the golf. And then one day, very soon, you just don’t wake up.”

For a decade, I suffered from chronic lower back pain. Then, three years ago I severely herniated a disc at L5-S1. I narrowly avoided emergency surgery, and couldn’t walk for five weeks.

It was the last straw.

I vowed to fix my back once and for all. I went to the ends of the earth, trying everything.

The most effective thing I’ve found, by far, is the simple back extension. It strengthens the entire posterior chain, including the intricate scaffold of muscles that support the spine.

Start with static holds. Then, when you’ve worked up to 2 minutes, start moving as shown below.

Once you can do 3 sets of 30, start adding weight (cradle it in your arms).

Do it twice a week and you’ve got a solid baseline program for preventing and recovering from back problems.

Der Ingenieur hatte eine thermische Analyse für ein Bauteil des Raptor-Triebwerks eingereicht. Das Dokument umfasste achtzig Seiten. Es durchlief die Prüfung von drei leitenden Ingenieuren. Es wurde genehmigt und für die Umsetzung eingeplant.

Zwei Tage später kam um elf Uhr abends eine E-Mail von Elon. Eine einzige Zeile. „Deine Berechnung des Wärmestroms auf Seite vierunddreißig geht von stationären Bedingungen aus, aber der Lastzyklus ist transient. Rechne es neu.“

Der Ingenieur sagte, er habe fünf Minuten lang auf diese E-Mail gestarrt. Nicht weil sie harsch war. Sondern weil sie stimmte. Die Annahme steckte tief in einer Teilberechnung, die keinem der drei prüfenden Ingenieure aufgefallen war. Elon hatte sie gefunden, in einem Dokument, das er gar nicht hätte lesen müssen, auf einer Seite, wo niemand von ihm erwartet hätte, dass er sie um elf Uhr abends an einem Dienstag gegenprüft.

Er sagte, genau solche Momente seien der Grund für die Kultur bei SpaceX. Nicht weil Elon Menschen mit Reden motiviert. Er hält kaum Reden. Die Kultur entsteht, weil jeder Ingenieur weiss, dass jedes eingereichte Dokument Zeile für Zeile von einem Mann gelesen werden könnte, der genau den einen Fehler findet, den alle übersehen haben. Nicht um zu bestrafen. Sondern um zu verhindern, dass der Fehler in die Hardware gelangt. Denn Fehler in Hardware führen zu Explosionen.

Die Angst gilt nicht der Kündigung. Die Angst gilt dem Gedanken, Arbeit einzureichen, die nicht das absolut Beste ist, und dass der CEO eines Sechs-Firmen-Imperiums genau den Fehler findet, den man selbst hätte erkennen müssen. Diese Angst erzeugt bessere Ingenieurskunst als jedes Motivationsposter es je könnte.

One of my favourite details in The Lord of the Rings is hidden in Boromir’s death scene.

As he dies, the choir sings Elvish words adapted from one of the book’s most beautiful passages in The Two Towers, where Faramir says: “I do not love the sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”

These are Faramir’s words, but they fit Boromir perfectly. For all his flaws, he never fought for fame or the thrill of battle, but because he loved Gondor, his people, and all he believed worth protecting.

She’d wake up at 4:30am to get her “miles in” while training for marathons.
