The perception is terrible, chess is the ONLY competitive game that uses them. No one else folds up and quits because it "doesn't matter." They should go.

If Hikaru had played Magnus seriously and won, his standing would have been higher and so his opponent in the Knockout would have been lower on the chart. Hikaru is currently drawn in the knockout. He might be winning against a lower opponent.

But while are all proud and giggling, the rest of the world can move on, since if we don’t take a prestigious and highly promoted event seriously, why should they.
