Gachagua and Ruto need to stop taking Kenyans for a ride. Let’s talk about BATUK…

Gachagua now claims Ruto’s administration demanded a KSh 3 billion bribe to allow BATUK to conduct its military training in Kenya this year. If that allegation is true, then maybe it starts to answer some of the questions Kenyans have been asking for years because, BATUK’s presence in this country has been controversial for years. We’ve heard concerns about environmental damage, unexploded ordnance left behind after training, damaged roads, allegations of misconduct involving some personnel, unresolved court cases, and communities that have spent years demanding accountability and compensation. Yet through all that, BATUK has remained. So if it’s true that a KSh 3 billion bribe was demanded just to allow this year’s training, then it’s only natural for Kenyans to ask whether this is part of the reason so many of these concerns have never been adequately addressed.

But Gachagua also lost me when he said Nanyuki’s growth is courtesy of BATUK.

First things first, we need to stop this slave mentality that makes us believe our prosperity depends on foreign military bases. BATUK sits on hundreds of acres of Kenyan land worth billions. Imagine if that land was put to work directly for Kenyans through agriculture, industry, housing, research or other productive investments that create opportunities for our own people. Why are we being conditioned to believe that our development depends on hosting a foreign army?

And let’s also be clear, BATUK is not leaving Kenya. They are simply not conducting their military training here this year. Their base is still here.

So instead of turning this into another Ruto vs Gachagua political circus, let’s finally have the conversation Kenyans have been trying to have for years. Does this arrangement still serve Kenya’s interests? Have the benefits genuinely outweighed the environmental, social and legal concerns that communities have continued to raise? And is this really the best use of hundreds of acres of valuable Kenyan land?
