The Miller Organization turned 18 years old today.
18 years ago, I quit my job to start a company.
The company struggled. 0 clients for 6 months.
I could not pay my bills.
I nearly defaulted on my small 3-bedroom condo.
I asked friends to rent empty bedrooms.
They paid $400 per month.
Now, I could pay my mortgage but not much else.
So, I went to the Panda Garden buffet 3X per week.
I snuck zip-lock bags into the buffet.
I scraped General Tso’s off plates into zip-lock bags.
General Tso’s fed my dog, Lucy, & me for days.
I went back to the buffet when I ran out of food.
I stayed hungry.
6 months later, I got 1 client.
I fucking killed for that client.
Then, I got a 2nd client. He owned 4 restaurants.
The Biltmore. The Virginian. West Main. Three.
I fucking killed for him.
Then, he opened Citizen Burger Bar.
I fucking killed for him again.
The word got out. People talked. The phone rang.
Hedge funds. Law firms. Docs. Investors. Buyers. Sellers.
Same plan: show up, work hard, communicate, grind.
DWYGD = Do What You Gotta Do
18 years later, I own 24 rental properties.
That small condo has $0 debt & yields $2500 per month.
My wife and I own a 5-BR home on 4+ acres in Ivy.
Today, The Miller Organization puts deals together.
We solve problems, connect $ & drive market share.
This journey has been the best, hardest thing ever.
It’s been the longest, shortest thing ever.
18 years later, we have 8-year-old & 3-year-old sons.
They make us happy; they drive us crazy.
18 years later, I’m happy - tired - but happy.
If you’ve read this far, leave with this:
Make your passion your profession, and you will never work a day in your life.
This is America. Pick a job and become the person who does it.
Life is a fight for a knife in the mud. Win the fucking fight.
