The results are in for the flagship run of our The Nigerian Thinker Campus Ambassadors program.

1,040 applications. 40 selected.

From the beginning, our goal wasn't simply to recruit campus ambassadors. It was to find students who are curious, thoughtful, resourceful, and already creating meaningful impact in their communities.

So we designed a selection process to do exactly that.

Beyond the résumé and video submission, we looked for evidence of initiative, leadership, and a genuine commitment to thoughtful conversations on campus.

The applications told a fascinating story.

A functioning criminal justice system depends on more than policing alone.
After an arrest, investigations, prosecution, the courts and correctional services all play a role in determining what happens next.

As of 9 February 2026, Nigeria's correctional centres held 80,812 inmates, with 51,955 awaiting trial.

Someone awaiting trial has been arrested and is waiting for their case to be heard in court.

A convicted person has already been found guilty by a court of law.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲?

In 2017, John Gift Tobia was arrested in Port Harcourt and placed on remand.

He was neither convicted nor sentenced. His case just... stopped.
He stayed in detention for 2,922 days, almost 8 years, until the Rivers State High Court ruled his detention illegal and ordered his release in June 2026.

He's not alone. As of February 2026, 51,955 Nigerians are in the same position: awaiting trial, some for years, without a conviction.
