What are we seeing here?

A validation of parallels, however incomplete, between the #Putin state and the #Hitler #Nazi state.

It's June 1934, and we are approaching the #Night_of_the_Long_Knives (see the historical @NYTimes front page below.)

The much smaller SS, still only a Führer bodyguard, and the regular army vie for Ernest Röhm's head, chief of the huge SA, the Brown Shirts.

They constituted a parallel army, were roaming free in the streets and setting the openly thuggish tone of the new state.

Röhm sought to dissolve the regular army and replace it with the SA, on account of the army's lack of the necessary revolutionary fervor.

And so thugs went after thugs in the act that secured Hitler's dominance till the end by placing the relieved Prussian generals on Hitler's side.

But for that night, June 30, 1934, history might have been very different.

Imagine Röhm not being taken by complete surprise. Imagine him pulling the long knives first.

Imagine him establishing a revolutionary government in Berlin and igniting a civil war.

Imagine the army toppling him and dissolving the Nazi party.

Imagine Hitler being dead 89 years ago this month.

Is Putin/Hitler pulling the knives successfully against Prigozhin/Röhm, or is a counterfactual kicking in?

One way or another we know now, as if we haven't already, who the Nazis are in this equation. Nazi Russia is being reaffirmed and recognized for what it is. Remains only to be seen what Nazis win the upper hand
