When artists "go it alone" w/o a manager or label for the first time, it's vital to ask lots of questions of your partners. "Do you have everything you need?" "What are the expectations and timelines I need to plan for?" You're the QB now, and you need to connect all the dots!
Web3 puts the pricing/positioning portion of go-to-market on the artist. To some, this will be hugely empowering. To others, overwhelming. Are artists ready to be their own retail advocates at scale?
Normalize people making passionate posts about new music and artists they love before a RIP post, where they sound like the hugest fan in the world of someone they literally never mentioned before
2 things artists/small labels are judged upon (that the industry won't tell you abt). 1/How organized the artist/manager/label manager is, 2/how reasonable your lawyer is. I have capped investments on gr8 artists b/c their POC is a nitwit or expectations are bonkers.
The modern biz overlooks the importance of outside songwriters in the success of pop stars, historically. We overemphasize the need for recording artists to be outstanding writers, too, and largely speaking this has rarely been the case. RIP to a legend

Artists self-releasing music is still a relatively new concept in the music industry. Whether or not they know it, distributors will look to the artist to perform the duties of a label. Those duties are documented in this piece I wrote for @hypebot

Artist manager before deal: Before we start working together I would like you to negotiate with our lawyer for one million days in which they will violently assault your agreement
Artist manager the day after deal is signed: I need a favor which directly violates the terms

A well organized digital archive of all your masters, album art, and metadata is a vital asset! Donโt trust a DSP, social media site, or even your distributor to be your singular cloud back-up. https://t.co/B3BKsEFL5U
Idk who needs to hear this but artists, you do NOT need to spend hours each day learning to mouth funny lines from other tiktoks to become successful at your musicโฆbut if you like it have fun!
@Wednesday_Band_ Despite some of these ridic comments, thanks for putting this and your art into the world. Touring and being a working band is incredibly challenging, though that can change in an instant! Best of luck @Wednesday_Band_
A great topic, even if it has devolved into an unhealthy thread. If I was king, artists would be able to apply for universal basic income. Absent of that dream, we treat artists like any other capitalistic venture, which makes it VERY VERY HARD to succeed. What's the answer?
Just for transparencies sake & cause I feel comfortable posting this: here is why it is so hard for bands to go to SX !!
This is b4 paying 10% $ to the booking agent and not including food expenses
Combination of staying in COVID safe places and gas prices is p devastating
Each week the main goal should be to decouple your consumers from social media and DSPs โfollowersโ to direct relationships. If you canโt reach your audience outside IG, Spotify, or TikTok you have no actual consumers. This is true in every industry. Go.
