Lesson 6: Build Your Work Ethic Early

Work ethic and discipline don’t come in one lump sum. They are habits we build gradually, and the early phase of career is one of the most important periods for building them.

Today, there are many things we can easily hide under like "work life balance", "my work is 9 to 5", "I don’t open my laptop on weekends", "demanding work is toxic" etc.

There is truth in some of these things. Rest and boundaries are important.

But if you have big ambitions, particularly early in your career when you mostly have your work to speak for you, I don’t think you can follow all of them rigidly and expect exceptional outcomes.

Also, like most folks, you may not get the big job, great pay, role or opportunity you think you deserve early in life. That shouldn’t become a reason for doing just enough.

Develop the attitude that wherever you find yourself, you will do the best you can with what you have. Not necessarily for your employer, but because your work ethic is an expression of who you are.

If you build the habit of doing just enough, mediocrity can become comfortable. And when the opportunity you’ve been waiting for eventually comes, you may not have built the discipline required for it.

Don’t wait for the big job, perfect role, promotion, salary or the country you want to japa to before developing a great work ethic.

It is better to be prepared for an opportunity that doesn’t come than for the opportunity to come and find you unprepared.
You are not only working for your employer, you are building yourself, small small.

Your relationship with yourself cannot be built entirely around improvement. At some point, you have to become someone you are allowed to enjoy being. You get to be proud of who you are. Present tense.

I've now spoken with investors who have backed 5 of Africa's 10 unicorns. Two things keep coming up.

The first, you've probably seen several times on your timeline. The quality, leadership and resilience of the founder who builds a unicorn cannot be overstated.

The second thing is what these founders do differently. They intentionally build an early investor base that will get them past the seed to post-Series A trough, where most startups fail.

Not enough early-stage founders do this.

It is really hard to raise money for a startup in Africa, so I get that when I say you should intentionally choose the early investors that back you, it sounds like a luxury.

But building a startup in Africa, where the GDP per capita is less than the GDP per capita in Mexico, is a very difficult journey full of ups and downs. You are way better off finding the best investors for the journey you want to go on.

And, if you don't believe me, ask any founder in Africa that has raised a Series B and onwards.
