HGC is gone. A lot of people were very adversely effected by Blizzard's shift in direction. I hope those people find something. Their passion deserves a game that will stand proudly in the esports realm, but I hope HotS isn't that game.
When you tailor your game to pro play, the magic is gone. The meta doesn't shift because a shift in the meta means your pro play is unpredictable. If your pro play is unpredictable, you don't know how to tailor your next release for pros to play it and drive sales.
Then it happened. Esports happened. New tanks were tankier. New assassins were assassinyer. New healers were healerer. Some were still interesting, ragnaros and mediev come to mind. But I feel like most new heroes were released with the intent of being viable in the current meta.
Then HotS came along. I was blown away by the novelty. No moba had simultaneously stripped away core aspects while offering so much in return like hots did. No items, but talents! No last hits, but shared xp! Many maps! Crazy heroes! Murky, Sylv, chogall, abathur, tyrande!
After enough changes to characters I liked to play into characters I didn't like to play (and regular burnout), I stopped playing. LoL wasn't fun for me anymore. But it was more popular than ever, and the esports scene had reached unprecedented levels.
But this is a free game that needs players to buy new skins and characters to make money. So new characters needed to be "good enough" to be played by the pros so that everyone would buy them and their skins. Riot couldn't risk releasing someone that didn't "fit".
Then something happened. Esports happened. Suddenly there were 5 defined roles. New characters were tailored to fit in that framework. Old characters were reworked to fit in, to be "safe", to not have any abilities that were too different from other champions.
I played league of legends when it came out. It was revolutionary for me. I enjoyed the hero/item/summoner diversity. The game was great. Every new patch brought something new to the table, some new way to think about the game.
I beat all of the ch4 expecting some kind of epilogue since a lot of the plot threads seemed to reference some sort of hellish threat but I didn't get anything after doing all 8. Maybe I need to do more side quests... #octopathtraveler
