Most Americans who call themselves Irish aren’t talking about the same thing as the famine Irish of Boston and New York.
A huge number are really Scots-Irish — English and Scottish border stock, Protestant frontier people whose ancestors came out of the borderlands, were planted in Ulster, then pushed into Appalachia, Tennessee, Kentucky and the South.
Not Dublin. Not Cork. Not the tenements. A harder, older story of border clans, rifles, honour, feuds, distrust of authority and life on the edge of empire.
The green beer version of Irish-American identity hides a lot. For millions, the real roots are English, Scottish, Ulster, frontier, Presbyterian, hill country and rebellion.
Different people. Different history. Different temperament. 🏴🏴🇬🇧
If you are an American then you bow to no man. No earthly ruler.
You do owe two things to those who wish to divide you: defiance and contempt.
That goes doubly true for the media who was once entrusted with telling us the truth.
Our forefathers knew how to check the media when they got off the rails. We forgot that, and now treat them as some priest class.
No more shall we allow them to divide us. As normal Americans or her military.
Never again will they use our honor against us to push a divisive agenda. Separating us from our brothers and sisters. NO MORE!
Remember your Oath. And remember freedom of the press does not mean freedom of the press from criticism.
Celebrate them when they do well. Vigorously check them when they don’t.
They work for you. So leave no doubt in their minds where they stand in our hierarchy.
Beneath you and I. And slightly above pimps, thieves, and drug dealers.
Mass shootings before the definition change was the honest one. Columbine, Sandy Hook... shootings without a specific reason except to inflict harm. Gang shootings, murder/self deletion should not count. "Mass shootings" is disingenuous as mass murder can happen a number of ways, Pride parade/van. The term only exists to demonize firearms.
@michellmybell1@travelingflying Because your work is not a part of our identity. No man ever asks another, upon meeting, what his wife does for work. We do ask what he does for work.
@AhmadRehanKhan Did he take her words away? Seems like she's free to say it and he is free to say what he wants about it. What's not free speach here? Also not tough questions - attacks. She's a sock puppet who live exactly the way he said.
@mattvanswol@HistoryBoutique Imagine public school districts manned by teachers and administrators with the Department of Ed fully funded but zero students in school. We'd still be better off.
I have dealt with a lot of theft and fraud in my life. It comes with the job of being a ship captain.
The problem is never the theft. It’s the work the theft creates.
Someone once stole a $500 radio out of our lifeboat. Five hundred dollars is a rounding error on a rig burning a million a day. Everyone had a pretty good idea who took it, but he almost certainly dropped it over the side, so there was no evidence, and with no evidence there was no reprimand.
That $500 radio, a safety critical item, cost us hundreds of man hours. Paperwork. An investigation. New HR anti-theft training for every soul on board. Remedial steps to make sure it never happened again. Then a helicopter to fly the replacement out.
That is the real cost of fraud in any system. For every dollar stolen, hundreds go to the agencies and nonprofits that exist to “fix” the problem. The theft is the seed. The compliance apparatus is the tree.
The only real fix is to fire the people everyone already knows are stealing. HR will never allow it, because the entire anti-radio-theft ecosystem that grew up around the loss would collapse overnight. The ecosystem needs the thief more than the thief needs the radio.
And theft is spectacularly inefficient on its own terms. Even if he got that radio ashore, it was worth maybe two hundred used on ebay. We spent tens of thousands to replace three hundred dollars of value that no longer existed anywhere in the world. It would have been WAY cheaper to hand him the radio and a receipt.
That is the part nobody in the fraud-prevention business wants said out loud: the loss is almost never what breaks you. What breaks you is everything the institution builds to prove it responded.
The saddest truth is it would be far cheaper to just send every Somali home with a million dollars each. They would be happier. We would be happier. Everyone would be better off except the NGOs
1 in 16 American kids no longer goes to school.
Their parents took them home.
In 1999 it was 1 in 59.
Homeschooling has nearly quadrupled since.
Many conservative families are homeschooling over values.
- Critical race theory
- Gender ideology
- Schools that hide things from parents
They aren't wrong on the academics either.
Proficient, high school seniors, by our own Department of Education's standard:
- Math: 22%
(45% can't do basic math, the worst in recorded history)
- Science: 22%
- Reading: 35%
Senior math and reading are the lowest ever recorded.
We spend $20,387 a year per student, more than 98% of countries on earth.
We wrote the test.
We set the passing line.
Three out of four seniors still can't clear it.
Schools teaching values nobody asked for, failing at the subjects they were hired for.
You pay twice.
Once in taxes, once in what your kid never learned.
3.4 million families quit waiting and started homeschooling.
Nobody put it on a ballot.
They just left.
