Ramchandra Prasad Sinha was the first justice of the Patna High Court from Nalanda district. Born on 11 August 1926 into an affluent Ghamaila Kurmi farmer family in Mahaddipur village, he rose through merit and hard work to become one of Bihar's distinguished jurists.

Mr Sinha began practicing law at the Patna High Court in 1955 and soon established himself as a renowned advocate. In 1979, he was appointed Government Advocate. Within just two years, he was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Patna High Court in 1981 and was confirmed as a permanent judge in 1982.

Justice Sinha served as the justice of the Patna High Court for approximately seven years until his retirement in 1988. During his tenure, he adjudicated several important cases and earned a reputation as a jurist of great calibre. Even after retirement, he continued contributing to the legal field.
Among those who trained under his mentorship was Justice Ram Nandan Prasad, who later became a judge of the Patna High Court and the first Chairman of the National Commission for Backward Classes.

One of Justice Sinha's most notable public contributions came in the aftermath of the 1989 Bhagalpur riots, which claimed nearly 1,000 lives, most of them Muslims. He was one of the three members of the inquiry committee constituted to investigate the violence. The committee's report held sections of the local administration, police, and other elements responsible for administrative failures, collusion, and the spread of rumours, and it specifically indicted certain officials, including the Superintendent of Police. The report remains an important historical document on accountability for the violence.

Justice Sinha was also among the eight founding members of the Human Rights Association, Bihar, reflecting his commitment to civil liberties and the rule of law beyond the courtroom. Mr Sinha's legacy endures through his contributions to jurisprudence, human rights, and the administration of justice in Bihar.

Dr. Sarvagya Singh Katiyar, born in 1935 into a Katiyar Kurmi family, was an eminent scientist whose pioneering research led to several groundbreaking scientific discoveries.

• During his predoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with John W. Porter, he was the first to determine the kinetic mechanism of the fatty acid synthetase complex. This groundbreaking work remains a key reference in enzymology even today.

• His extensive research on enzyme architecture and catalytic domain discovered many new details on the functioning of enzymes which helped expand the application of enzymes both in industries and in the medical field.

• He authored over 125 scientific papers published in world renowned peer-reviewed journals.

Dr Katiyar's contributions to science and society was not limited to this, he was a great educationist as well.

• Established India's first biochemistry-biotechnology laboratory at the IIT Kanpur during his tenure as HoD of chemistry department at the University.

• Was the longest serving Vice Chancellor of the prestigious Kanpur University for four consecutive terms.

• He was the founder director of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Lucknow.

• Served as president of Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) and Association of Indian Universities (AIU)

• He was an elected Fellow of several prestigious academies, including the The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the National Academy of Sciences, India, the Indian National Science Academy, the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Institute of Chemists, and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

For his exceptional accomplishments and contributions to the fields of science and education, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2009, India's third-highest civilian honour, making him one of the few Indian scientists to have received two Padma awards.

• Acharya P. C. Ray Memorial Medal (1990)

• Professor B. N. Ghosh Memorial Award (1995)

• Soka University Award of Highest Honor (2001)
