@AzratemES Hang in there, dude. Everything has been excellent up to this point. More consistent animation is always a plus, I’m sure you can figure out the voice thing.
@LadyWasabee My first thought was to blurt out certain expletives, but doing so would diminish the absolute eloquence and beauty of what I just watched. You are a truly a master of your craft. So phenomenally well done, this is getting bookmarked and saved in every way I can.
Listen, I love that dude’s Yule Ball video. Like, I LOVE it. I’ve watched it multiple times. However, I consider his videos to be almost an AU AU. Very similarly to the Lumos Lumos season trailers, where Harry and Malfoy’s relationship is much more involved in the earlier books.
The Sectumsempra scene needs to hit so good because for me it’s the first time Malfoy comes to any serious harm. After seeing Malfoy bleeding on the floor, Harry’s entire world needs to come to a screeching halt. In that moment, he makes a choice: no matter what she’s done, what she’s doing, he loves her, and he cannot lose her. Seeing the fear, the pain in her eyes, he can’t help but fill with a burning desire to save her. It’s the low point in their relationship, but it’s the moment that should fuel Harry with the drive to actually kill Voldemort. Malfoy will walk away from it thinking Harry hates her, and her own self-loathing would tell her he’s right to, especially after she’s involved in Dumbledore’s murder.
I’m actually starting writing a version like the Lumos Lumos trailer, where Harry drops his wand and embraces her rather than cast the spell, and she breaks down while he holds her, only for it to pan out to Harry watching what he wishes he did in the Mirror of Erised. I’m gonna make it hurt if I can.
This is a good outline. The only thing I changed in my own outline is keeping things mostly canon for book 4 up to the Second Task. They do share a dance, though in what fashion I’m not sure, cause them going to the ball together at that point would be quite out of character. It’s still Ron in the lake. I do like them opening up more in between the Second and Third Task. However, I think Snape should teach Dracaena Occlumency to protect her mind from Voldemort, and Dumbledore instructs her to keep her distance from Harry, adding to the angst of book 5. Otherwise, I like yours. Spot on.
I do think that it’s the most divisive point of the whole movement. You have to have the right buildup for it not to happen, but that equally changes the 5 and a half books leading up to it. It can work for each individual’s take on where the story goes, but if we’re trying to stick to as close to canon as possible, I think it’s important to keep it.
Harry is absolutely at fault here, and that’s why I think it’s so pivotal. It’s the one moment in their relationship throughout book 1-7 that he is genuinely to blame for what happens. Like others have said before, he doesn’t learn his lesson with Sirius. This would solidify that. Otherwise he’s just a saintly figure that can do no wrong.
@RDiavolos@Critical_Scribe@Strittposter It’s gonna take a sec for me to flex the old writing muscles. I’ll admit it’s been a minute. But I’m planning on writing it this weekend. I don’t have very many followers, especially from this community, so hopefully you see it when I post it. I’ll put the #Malfoid on it
It blows my mind that people are still saying “Harry would never do that to her.”
HE. DOESNT. KNOW. WHAT. THE. SPELL. DOES.
The equivalent is like, going into your friend’s garage and opening a box with a bunch of toy guns. One’s a metal BB gun, one’s a spring-loaded airsoft gun, and then one is just a loaded .45. Without the orange tips on the end of the gun, all three could look completely identical until you fire it at something. The notion that Harry would use the first two but not the third on Malfoy is absurd. He’s going to use whatever comes to his mind.
The argument that the spell says “For Enemies” is completely void here as well. Again, if you have a box of guns that are mostly annoyances, why would you ever consider that one of them has the potential to kill. Also, she is firing spells at him. He strongly suspects she is now a Death Eater, though he doesn’t know why. Quite frankly, Harry doesn’t really care in HBP. He knows she’s hexed Katie, put people under the Imperious curse, and attempted to kill Dumbledore multiple times. At this point in the book, Harry would believe there’s no coming back from this.
Him seeing what Sectumsempra does, witnessing Malfoy dying on the floor, would reignite any feelings he had for her. In that moment, Death Eater or not, he would not be able to let her go. He wouldn’t be able to bear losing her.
So many people are missing the point of what that scene does, even in the original story. And they’re basing their logic on hindsight and the knowledge of what the spell does.
Harry does not know what it does before he fires it. THAT’S THE POINT. The potions book subplot of HBP does a lot to highlight differences between Snape as a student and Harry. We see glimpses of that in book 5 as well through some of Snape’s school memories and being bullied by the Marauders. Where Snape saw enemies, and never forgave those who bullied him, Harry is experiencing the same thing with Malfoy, and he ultimately realizes that what they do doesn’t define who they are and who they will be.
When Harry uses Sectumsempra and sees what it does, it shocks him. It’s supposed to. And it shows him the line he won’t cross when it comes to magic and how he wants to use it. This affects him for the rest of the books. When they leave Privet Drive, Harry is only firing Expelliarmus and other nonharmful spells. When they later run into Death Eaters after the wedding, Ron says they should just kill them, but Harry insists them wipe their memories instead. I think a lot of this stems from that scene in the bathroom, where Harry sees you don’t need to use Unforgiveable curses to do huge, lasting damage.
@Critical_Scribe@Strittposter You know what, I’ve been contemplating writing some fic for weeks now, toying with some ideas and then not getting around to it. I’m gonna write this one for sure. Stay tuned.
Some people have brought up ideas about the Mirror of Erised and how Dumbledore hid it in the Room of Requirement or something of that nature.
I think it would be an incredibly moving scene if we see this version of the bathroom scene take place, Harry embraces her and helps her, and then it pans out and it’s Harry watching what he wishes he did in the Mirror.
I think that’s why @AzratemES did such a good job in his videos; there are several ways you can arrive at the same conclusions.
I’ve had some ideas over the past few days of how to get there as well. Potentially one of them being that at the end of Year 4, Harry asks Dumbledore to alter Malfoy’s memories of the Yule Ball to protect her from Voldemort, and while Dumbledore would agree to “help protect her,” he would instead have Snape teach her Occlumency, and instruct her to stay away from Harry for her own safety and his. This would cause Harry to think she doesn’t remember any of it, and he proceeds through Year 5 as though they didn’t have anything between them. Dumbedore having his reasons and all, he wouldn’t tell Harry his plan either (already fearing the connection between his mind and Voldemort’s). So Harry kisses Cho, Malfoy gets pissed, and turns Cho in to Umbridge.
@adayasmr Absolute peak as always. For real, everyone is saying it. We need a full series. English and Japanese for those of us not fully immersed in anime.
