With this post, I join teachers and students at the Daniel Pearl Magnet High School in appealing the LA Unified School District to postpone the cancellation of the Spanish and Music programs. The School must retain its magnets.
Proud student journalism moment: After hearing that their school’s only Spanish teacher and only music teacher were being displaced due to budget cuts, @ThePearlPost student journalists at my alma mater, Daniel Pearl Magnet High School, got to work covering the fallout. 🧵
Closing the Music Department at the Daniel Pearl Magnet High School is like breaking his violin. The school is an inspiration to the entire LA district.
Congratulations to alumna @BrumerDelilah , who received 3rd place in commentary (newspapers - circulation under 50,000) for her @ladailynews story “The Class of 2023 at Daniel Pearl Magnet High...,” published when she was print editor-in-chief. (3/3) https://t.co/IfEM8iK78S
While we didn’t win any awards, former editors-in-chief Alan Ruiz & Rikka Dimalanta had a great time at @LAPressClub SoCal Journalism Awards gala last night at the Millenium Biltmore Hotel. They saw @yudapearl, who presented the Daniel Pearl Award for Courage (1/3)
& Integrity in Journalism to @WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich, who has been wrongly detained in a Russian prison for more than a year. (The Wall Street Journal is the same publication that journalist Daniel Pearl worked for when he was kidnapped and killed.) (2/3)
⌛ DEADLINE JUNE 30: Nominate courageous or transparency-loving student journalist(s) for one of our national awards. 🏆 ➡️ https://t.co/j8BONiRoXn
Both #studentpressfreedom awards are presented (with cash prizes!) at the high school and college level. No cost to enter!
Honored to attend the Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture with Dr. Steven Pinker, learning about rationality… so many questions! Always happy to see Dr. Judea Pearl and be able to say hello!

🗓️ TODAY IN HISTORY: 55 years ago, SCOTUS said the @USConst_Amend_I "means what it says," even for students & teachers at school. Unfortunately it later carved out student journalists, and advocates have pushed for laws to restore those rights. Learn more: https://t.co/LVADCPeWLf
To end our celebration of #SJW2024, here are Print Editor-in-Chief Alan Ruiz and Online Editor-in-Chief Rikka Dimalanta showing you the effects of the rise in AI technology on journalism. 📽️ by Rikka Dimalanta and Alan Ruiz. #Journalism#JEA100
Let's end #SJW2024 with photos of students from The Pearl Post and Prestige Yearbook. The editors and staff members work hard every day to keep you informed on what’s happening on campus, on issues you care about and topics you should know about. #JournalismNext#JEA100
Yesterday, in celebration of #SJW2024, the theme was #JournalismNow and students in all the journalism classes practiced their media literacy skills by doing some lateral reading to verify news information from accounts on social media. #HereToStay#JEA100#MediaLiteracy
I’ve experienced a censorship fight firsthand, so I know how scary it is. I also know how brave these student journalists and their advisor are for standing up for their CA Ed Code 48907 rights. @ThePearlPost won and so can the @MVOracle. #StudentPressFreedomDay
Today marks the third day of Scholastic Journalism Week and to celebrate, we chose to spotlight six current influential journalists who have impacted journalism through their determination and work. 🖊️ by Alexa Garay and Isaac Herrera. #SJW2024#HeretoStay#JEA100#Journalism
