Am truly heartbroken at the unexpected passing of one of my best friends #SitaramYechury, one of India’s finest sons. If there was ever anyone who lived by his word & practised what he preached, it was the amazing Sitaram. I’ve been awed for decades by his easy renunciation of material prosperity, his genuine commitment to Proudhon’s famous aphorism that “property is theft”, living as a follower of Marx ideally should.
One of the few real public intellectuals in this country, like Jyoti Basu & Harkishan Singh Surjeet before him, he understood the wisdom of jettisoning doctrinaire theory in favour of practical paradigms of engagement with the political system.
The CPI(M) under his leadership was
a bridge amongst the secular parties, ensuring that their politics remained meaningful in changing circumstances. He was a coalition builder in the mould of Surjeet and Basu.
I will miss him very much, he was a staunch friend during times of trouble, unflinching in his kindness & support at difficult junctures.
I had known him for four decades, listened with fascination to his musings on Indian and international politics. His deep absorption in Marxist theory, from Leon Trotsky to Mao, was singular and showed him to be a true believer in the possibilities of political change .
Farewell dear Comrade, the world is poorer without you. And India has lost a devoted son.

It’s extraordinarily difficult and emotionally wrenching to come to terms with the death of Sitaram Yechury (August 12, 1952-September 12, 2024), a friend and comrade of close to 50 years. Sita was brilliant, versatile, charismatic, empathetic, and amiable — and his life was a model of purity, integrity, commitment, sacrifice, and ideological and political accomplishment. As the CPI(M) Polit Bureau’s statement of homage points out, his untimely death “at this crucial juncture in our national politics is a big blow to the CPI(M) and a grievous loss for the Left, democratic, and secular forces.” The people of India have lost of their finest sons.
