My numbers give the #USMNT a 57% chance to advance over Belgium. The first set Round of 16 predictions are up, the rest will go up Sunday: https://t.co/jLhhdseqDz
The Round of 32 will make this #WorldCup spectacular. Let me explain.
What is the chance that the top 8 favorites all advance this week? To calculate the odds, I'll use my model at The Power Rank that uses international matches since 2022 and makes adjustments for strength of schedule.
Based on these projections, there is about a 5% chance that all 8 top favorites advance past the Round of 32.
With so many teams remaining in a single elimination tournament, it's almost impossible not to have upsets. The World Cup is now using the same formula that has powered March Madness and the FA Cup for years.
Belgium is the most likely to go down, Argentina the least. But at some point this week, the internet will explode with joyous applause as a global behemoth falls. Let's go Midsummer Madness!

Now that every team has played two matches at the World Cup, here are my updated impressions of each team, this time in alphabetical order to appease @TheDegenWeekly:
Algeria: ok
Argentina: looked great vs. Austria, rounding into form
Australia: outplayed in both matches but not as bad as I would have thought
Austria: ok
Belgium: underwhelming for the 69th consecutive tournament
Bosnia and Herzegovina: bad but not terrible
Brazil: better against Haiti but I still think this team is low key mediocre
Canada: I’M ALL THE WAY BACK IN, BABY
Cape Verde: hard not to be impressed, expectations were zero
Colombia: still underwhelming
Croatia: expected more
Curacao: good story but they stink
Czechia: how did this team beat Denmark in qualifying? Straight trash
DR Congo: way better than expected, very sound defensively
Ecuador: how many chances can a team piss away in two matches?
England: disappointing draw vs. Ghana but still a powerhouse
Egypt: solid, nobody is gonna enjoy playing them
France: top end talent is just so damn good, easily one of the best teams
Germany: most fun team to watch by far
Ghana: somewhere between bad and very bad
Haiti: better than I expected but still bad
Iran: brutal
Iraq: brutal
Ivory Coast: will be a tough out for someone in knockouts
Japan: very solid
Jordan: woof
Mexico: still underwhelming
Morocco: underwhelming vs. Scotland but still a dark horse (and for those arguing they are not a dark horse, they are still 16/1 to REACH the final at @FDSportsbook. They were ~1.1% to win pre-tournament. Definition of a dark horse.)
Netherlands: gonna be overrated moving forward
New Zealand: surprisingly feisty
Norway: good team but many cracks
Panama: very bad, approaching major ass
Paraguay: major ass
Portugal: ok, that’s more like it
Qatar: how in God’s name did this team qualify for this tournament?
Saudi Arabia: woof
Scotland: meh
Senegal: if by some miracle they make it to the knockout round, they are going to give someone a tough time
South Africa: still major ass, just happened to also play a major ass team
South Korea: decent squad, deserved better against Mexico
Spain: I think they are the best overall team
Sweden: I will die on the hill that this team is terrible
Switzerland: actually converted their chances second time around, quality squad
Tunisia: this team reeks
Turkiye: don’t deserve to be going home already but fuck around and find out
Uruguay: surprisingly dogshit
USA: much better than I expected, capable of making a run
Uzbekistan: Fabio Cannavaro gonna get an ulcer watching these guys defend
What did I get wrong?
