On this day, The Promise was released worldwide in 2017, marking a rare moment in mainstream cinema when a long-avoided story was brought to the big screen 🇦🇲🎬

Set during the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, the film tells a personal story against a tragic historical reality that had rarely been depicted at this scale in Hollywood.

Directed by Academy Award-winning director Terry George and with a cast including Oscar Isaac, Christian Bale, Charlotte Le Bon, and Angela Sarafyan, the film brought global visibility to a major part of history. 

Backed by Armenian-American businessman, investor, and philanthropist Kirk Kerkorian, the project was independently funded to ensure it could be made truthfully without having to compromise.

As we mark Armenian Heritage Month, films like this continue to play an important role — not just in remembering the past, but in making sure these stories are seen and understood on a wider scale.

Gosh how can I not love Christian Bale? Rewatching The Promise just made me feel so many emotions all over again. I'm so grateful. Back like 5-6 years I'd never imagine that the man in the movie about The Armenian Genocide is the man that made me fall in love with movies.

This evening I watched a beautiful but sad movie about the Armenian genocide with Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale. Maybe the best acting Isaac has ever done. Long but it was good. I’m always a little disappointed when historical movies about other nations are made by Americans starring Americans but it was still well done. (They tried very hard!) It’s called The Promise (2017). Can’t believe I’ve never heard of it before. Major actors!

The movie led to a heroic rescue.

I had no idea the French Admiral Louis Dartige du Fournet who led the operation, risked his career to bypass bureaucratic delays and order immediate action to rescue over 4000 Armenians.

A real life hero❣️
