Stupid advice to women of my generation and the generation before mine:

Our generation of men and the generations before us, were socialised to believe that a man’s primary value lies in his ability to provide financially . Whether we agree with that or not is beside the point. That conditioning remains entrenched. If a man has never been in a position to assume that role, think very carefully before committing yourself. He may genuinely love you, but there is every possibility that he will resent you in equal measure. His inability to fulfil the role he believes and has been taught, defines his worth is a battle he fights every day. Too often, that frustration finds expression in the person closest to him. Over time, that insecurity from him will erode your confidence, it will diminish your self-esteem and leave you emotionally depleted.

I am speaking generally here not universally. It is an entirely different matter if he was once able to provide financially and changing circumstances later altered the dynamics of the relationship. Life happens. That is a different conversation altogether. But if, from the very beginning, you knowingly enter a relationship where you are expected to carry the financial burden while he has never occupied that provider role, do not be surprised if you find yourself in a relationship marked by resentment, insecurity and emotional turmoil.

Sometimes love is simply not enough to overcome the weight of lifelong social conditioning. Don’t volunteer yourself to a man of a lesser pocket! That’s a death trap!

I keep warning you about comparing yourselves to people who lead luxurious lifestyles, purporting to be rich and well accomplished, making you feel like directionless underachieving failures. Only to learn you have been utterly unfair to yourself as you have been benchmarking against thieves. Be patient. Walk your comfortable journey one step at a time. Remain focused. Put in the effort.
