We started dating in 2011. I was 19 and I ignored every red flag because I wanted to be loved that badly.

By 2014 we were about to move in together. One night he ghosted me. Next morning he swore he had slept in his car outside his dad’s house.

A month later I came home, smelled something I didn’t recognise, called his job.
He wasn’t there.

Years later I looked at him and said if you have any love or respect for me, tell me the truth.

The paycheck hit the account Friday morning.

Except it was $1,200 short.

Employee: My paycheck is missing $1,200.

Payroll: According to our system, the amount is correct.

Employee: My salary is $5,200 a month. This deposit is $4,000.

Payroll: You had an unpaid absence.

Employee: One day.

Payroll: You were absent for three days.

Employee: Two of those days were approved PTO.

Payroll: The system shows otherwise.

Employee: Then your system is wrong.

Payroll pulled up the attendance records.

The employee opened their phone and showed the approval emails.

Employee: Here. My manager approved all three days….

FRIEND: “I know. I’ll pay everything back soon.”

I paused.

Then asked:

“You had $186 for dinner this weekend?”

Silence.

He finally said:

“That’s different.” I laughed.

He never asked me for money again.

And strangely, he eventually paid the $300.
