RETIREMENT SYSTEMS MUST CATCH UP TO WOMEN
South African women retire with roughly 21% less in pension savings than men, but this reflects structural barriers rather than poor financial judgement, says ASI Financial Services' Paul Mafisa.
Women are 1.2 times more likely to increase retirement contributions above default rates and tend to avoid impulsive decisions during market stress.
Persistent pay gaps and caregiving responsibilities, with 43.4% of children living only with their mothers, disrupt savings over time.
Mafisa argues South Africa's financial system still reflects outdated, male-shaped career assumptions.
He calls on employers and fund administrators to build smarter defaults, caregiving-aware retirement products, and more holistic financial advice for women.
