Out Run is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year!

Back in 1986, Sega dropped a revolution on the arcade scene, and I mean that in the very sense of the word. This wasn’t just another racing game - it was the first cabinet to put a proper steering wheel with force feedback in players' hands, complete with pedals and a real gear shifter. Suddenly, you weren't just playing a game; you were driving. As a kid and teenager this felt beyond epic.

Even the soundtrack was revolutionary. For the first time ever, players could hop between three iconic synth-pop bangers: Magical Sound Shower, Passing Breeze, and Splash Wave, all straight from an in-game radio. The music didn't just play in the background; it defined the entire sunny, coastal vibe of the game.

Under the hood, the game brilliantly recreated the Ferrari Testarossa's power, torque, and gearing, while letting skilled (and not-so-skilled in my case...) drivers drift around curves.

And those famous branching roads? An exciting new "interactive" feature! At regular intervals the path split left or right, handing players real choice and turning every run into a new challenge.

No wonder Out Run became Sega's best-selling arcade title in 1987. It didn't just set the standard - it invented a whole new way to experience racing games. For a 40 year game it still holds up remarkably well.
