GMA Response to Sammy Awuku’s false claims;
The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has noted with concern the continued public
commentary and media interviews by the Member of Parliament for Akwapim North, Hon Sammuel Awuku regarding the vessel MV Sankofa (IMO No 7395870). The Authority took note of the MP’s initial public assertions via a Facebook post on 9th April
2026, suggesting an intent to raise the issue in his capacity as the Vice Chair of the Parliament Committee on Public Administration and State Interest. In response, the GMA issued a statement dated 11th April 2026, indicating its readiness to appear before the Committee and
engage transparently should the Authority be invited to do so. However, we have observed a persistent trend of media engagements alongside the submission of the Right to Information (RTI) request on the subject matter, which has been widely circulated in both traditional and social media. In the light of the ongoing developments and to ensure the public is accurately informed, the Authority hereby provides the following responses.

For the first time in our history, we have a governor of our Central Bank who’s so responsive to issues concerning Ghanaians in the financial space⚡️. Thank you for making time to listen to the genuine concerns of X creators, and the assurances to resolve the issues @DrJPAsiama. #AbanPapaAba
No
There wouldn’t be building of new markets across all the districts
Some existing ones will be upgraded
Actually
Some markets are even already under construction by either the previous government or the previous Mahama government
Such markets are being modified to suit these purposes
A typical example is the Krofrom market
@Naa_Anyimah_PhD@JDMahama One other thing I forgot to mention as a challenge to the existing market is the voluntary nature of the 24hours market
If the occupants of the current structure do not subscribe to the 24hours market
You can’t forcefully evict them
So may have to build a new space
@Naa_Anyimah_PhD@JDMahama Yes
A lot of research went into it
But though the president has indicated that every district will benefit
Not every district will actually benefit, some districts do not even need it . It will all ball down to the roll out and after studies
H. E @JDMahama, on #ResettingGhanaTour of the Northern Region, has cut sod for two 24-hour economy markets at Kukuo and Bimbilla, advancing a nationwide initiative to boost local commerce, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve farmer incomes. The Bimbilla facility is set to include extensive storage infrastructure and a dedicated management system for efficient round-the-clock operations. #ResettingGhanaTour
