Last week, we lost a 28-year-old man in ER after a snake bite. Not a rare snake. Not a remote village. He made the same mistakes many people still make after a bite.
He tied his leg tightly with cloth:
One of the clearest signs that a country does not truly value its healthcare system is how it treats its health workforce.
You cannot underpay them, overwork them, subject them to inhumane conditions, and then restrict their freedom to leave. ENKR
A Doctor was overworked in an extreme inconsiderate toxic system.
The Dr was said to have complained that he doesn't feel good and wanted to take some time off to attend to his health.
He was denied time to rest, he was stretched to work for 72 hours.
While he was resting after, he was said to have later died.
He was a Surgery resident and was just starting post NYSC.
Is this what Medicine has turned to in Nigeria?
A system filled with toxicity that has zero regards for its junior colleagues.
I call on the government and other stakeholders to investigate this case thoroughly
We demand justice.
This Doctor should not have died.
This is the state of thousand of Doctors all over the world in residency training who are constantly humiliated.
How many more Doctors need to die before the system abolished these toxic working hours?
We demand justice for Dr Femi Rotifa.
