Episode 41: 3rd May 1961
After telling him about Marian, Ken receives a startling admission from Frank. Meanwhile, Swindley and Miss Nugent feel the wrath of Ena once more, Dr Graham has advice for Elsie, and Lucille doesn’t come home after school.
This episode was the first written by Adele Rose, who became one of the programme’s most prolific writers; she penned nearly 500 scripts between 1961 and 1998.
Episode 40: 1st May 1961
Dr Graham gives the verdict on Linda and the baby after her fall, and the Barlow men struggle with domesticity while Ida is away. Later, Ken tells Frank about his relationship with Marian, and Ena finally defeats Swindley.
Episode 39: 26th April 1961
Ena confronts Elsie’s new fella and word about him soon gets round. Meanwhile, Minnie discovers the lengths of Martha’s desperation, Ida receives news of her mother’s health, and Linda’s kindness comes back to bite her.
After meeting during the making of this episode, Renny Lister (Jean) and Kenneth Cope (Jed) began a relationship and later married. Their daughter, Martha, had a small role in the programme in 2015/16.

Christine befriends her quiet colleague Jean and convinces her to come for a night out. Meanwhile, scouser ex-con Jed Stone calls in on Dennis, and Ken asks Albert for advice about Marian.
Episode 37: 19th April 1961
Martha reaches breaking point with Ena, and Miss Nugent reaches breaking point with the Mission, telling Swindley she can’t stand being caretaker. Meanwhile, Christine has a difficult conversation with Joe, and Ken and Marian discuss their age gap.
Episode 36: 17th April 1961
Martha is struggling with Ena’s presence in her home, but Swindley is uninterested in Albert’s petition. Meanwhile, Christine is at a crossroads in her relationship with Joe, and Ken begins a secret relationship with an older woman.
Episode 35: 12th April 1961
As Martha and Minnie help Ena pack, Albert’s petition to have her reinstated gets a mixed reception. Meanwhile, the combined stress of pregnancy and moving house proves too much for Linda.
