@runandrant I would ask what the purpose was.
If it's serving a purpose (to make sure the student learned the material) I can understand this.
Otherwise it's just punitive, not to mention nonsensical, and there are better ways to handle it.
@mrsberniceallen@SteeleThoughts Yes. I once had someone explain it as "being friendly without being a friend," and that applies to other behaviors too.
@ncte@susangbarber As with all literature, students have to enjoy it for its meaning and relatability before they can appreciate and enjoy how the structure and craft adds to its meaning.
Unfortunately, we often start by teaching the structures.
