Why do I keep writing about russia’s war against Ukraine?
People tell me I should post less about the war and more about “professional” topics – economics, negotiation, leadership. I am, after all, an economist.
To those people: if you believe a profession is more important than a human life, we do not share the same values. I have no interest in persuading you. Read someone else.
I would love to write more about economics and education. I still try, whenever I can. But it is hard to hold an abstract idea steady when forty million people are fighting for their existence. And economics is not actually the escape hatch it looks like. My field studies incentives – what a person does when the cost of acting is high and the cost of doing nothing is invisible. That is precisely the question the West is failing right now. Writing about the war is not a detour from my discipline. It is the hardest application of it.
We have no moral right to look away. The world must see russia’s crimes. And I find myself reminding Americans, almost daily, that this war is still happening – because the major networks have largely stopped saying so. Silence is not neutral. It is a decision, and Moscow is counting on it.
There is also urgency. Ukrainians are being killed every day. Cities are being erased. And the West is not doing enough. Ukraine is defending not only its own freedom but the premises the democratic world claims to live by. If we do not act, “Never Again” is not a promise. It is a slogan – proof that we learned nothing.
So yes, I know these posts are uncomfortable. I am not sorry that they are. Until this war ends, I consider it my duty – as a human being – to help Ukraine survive and win.

A racist woman was posting comments & sending emails telling ICE to raid a San Padre Island business because the workers were stealing the food. She is MAGA & knew nothing about these workers except that they were all brown & she wanted them gone. She then got arrested for assault
This is a big problem with the current generation, especially young “conservative” boys who try to imitate these self-proclaimed “alpha males.”
First, many of these supposed alpha males aren’t strong men at all. They’re emotionally immature men who equate dominance with masculinity and often end up abusing women.
Second, beneath the bravado is often deep insecurity. Constantly boasting about wealth, status, cars, or sexual conquests isn’t confidence - it’s usually compensation.
Third, they somehow convince young men that looking like this is the pinnacle of masculine style. It isn’t. Dressing like an unbuttoned nightclub promoter while calling yourself the model of masculinity is more parody than aspiration.
Real masculinity isn’t measured by how loudly you brag, how many women you objectify, or how aggressively you posture online. It’s measured by integrity, self-control, responsibility, humility, and the way you treat other people - especially those with less power than you.
"Integrity, self-control, responsibility, humility, and the way you treat other people" sounds to me like a definition of a decent human being, not something uniquely masculine.
Maybe that's the problem. We struggle to define an identity when there isn't one. What, exactly, is masculine, and what is feminine?
Why aren't we simply human beings with our own likes, dislikes, quirks, and foibles?
Ultimately, masculinity and femininity are mutable concepts that vary across cultures and historical periods. That may give them some descriptive value, but very little value as prescriptions for how individuals should behave or understand themselves.
Rep. Lori Trahan: Republicans found $200 billion for ICE. They found $70 billion for a war in Iran. That money could have extended the ACA tax credits and cut premiums in half for 20 million Americans. It’s a question of priorities.
Our priorities are clear. We want affordable, accessible health care now, and we want to hold Republicans accountable for the harm they have caused to the American people.

russia destroys childhoods.
Ukrainian children shouldn't have to remind the world about this war. They should simply be allowed to grow up in peace.
HAPPENING NOW: Thousands have shut down Hazard St. Bridge in Houston for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.
The July 7 killing of the 52-year-old Mexican national by ICE has sparked nationwide protests, with demonstrations continuing in his hometown. Salgado Araujo’s family is demanding an independent investigation into his killing.
This demonstration comes as ICE detained more than 10,000 people last week amid a sweeping immigration crackdown.

"There is nobody more American than American Indians! We are America, how can you possibly target Native Americans? It's legally impossible!"
There is NOTHING more sinister than a government preparing the ground to declare their opponents domestic terrorists in order to hold onto power.
This man represents the worst among us. He knows what Trump is doing is wrong, he knows what Trump is doing is causing immeasurable reputational damage for the US on the world stage, but his own hubris and ambition forces him to defend the indefensible, and indulge in baseless fear tactics.
He is a despicable, traitorous and vile character who is willing to sacrifice his own values and those of the country he swore an oath to serve at the altar of a criminal corrupt pathological liar and adjudicated rapist, in furtherance of personal ambition.
Shame on him.i don’t know how he sleeps at night. Other than upside down in a cave.
